Did you know many off-the-shelf rodent baits can pose serious risks to native wildlife and pets? 🦉
Many baits contain anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) which not only kill rodents but also harm animals that eat poisoned rodents, including birds, reptiles, and domestic pets. If these rodents are then eaten by other animals, there is a risk of ‘secondary poisoning’ which can be lethal to the animal who consumes it.
To prevent rodents in your backyard or home and help protect wildlife and pets, consider alternative methods.
✅ Keep your place clean and tidy.
✅ Secure compost heaps.
✅ Pick up fallen fruits.
✅Seal holes and other potential entry points in buildings and enclosures.
✅ Use traps – careful positioning is necessary to be effective and reduce harm to non-target species, particularly with lethal traps.
✅ Place all traps and baits out of reach of non-target animals.
These methods help protect both your home and local wildlife.
