In an industry where efficiency, safety, and compliance are paramount, Rentco is committed to staying at the forefront of transport equipment solutions. As part of this commitment, we are proud to offer Performance-Based Standards (PBS) vehicles to our customers, enhancing their operational capabilities while maintaining the high standards that the industry demands.
๐ช๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐ถ๐ ๐ฃ๐๐ฆ?
Performance-Based Standards (PBS) is an innovative regulatory framework that allows heavy vehicles to be designed and operated based on how they perform on the road rather than adhering to traditional prescriptive limits. This approach enables vehicles to be optimised for specific tasks, enhancing their safety, productivity, and environmental impact.
PBS vehicles are assessed against stringent criteria that cover aspects such as stability, braking, and cornering. If a vehicle meets these standards, it can be longer, heavier, or have more axles than standard vehicles, but only if it performs safely within the designated road network. This flexibility allows for significant improvements in freight efficiency, reduced road wear, and lower emissions.
For our customers, the benefits of PBS are clear:
1. Increased Payloads: PBS vehicles can carry more cargo per trip, reducing the number of trips needed and lowering overall transport costs.
2. Enhanced Safety: By adhering to performance criteria rather than fixed dimensions, PBS vehicles are safer on the road, with better handling and stability.
3. Environmental Benefits: Fewer trips mean lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions, contributing to a greener supply chain.
4. Regulatory Compliance: PBS vehicles meet rigorous safety standards, ensuring compliance with Australian road regulations.
At Rentco, we understand that every transport operation is unique. Thatโs why weโre not just a rental company; weโre a solutions provider. By offering PBS vehicles, we give our customers the tools they need to optimise their operations, reduce costs, and stay competitive in a demanding market.
- Rentco offers a turnkey PBS solution allowing a short-term fix to assist customers through a volume peak or delayed delivery of their own PBS assets.
- Rentco offers a trailer rental product with customers prime movers underneath and handling all PBS certification.
- Providing permits where required for PBS assets.
- Rentco offers PBS approved vehicles and documentation for customers to add Rentco assets to their own existing permits.
Our team works closely with customers to understand their specific needs and provide tailored solutions that align with their operational goals. Whether itโs selecting the right PBS vehicle for a particular route or ensuring compliance with the latest regulations, Rentco is here to support our customers every step of the way.

Rentco's Electric Terminal Tractor (ETT) Gamble: A Bold Step Towards Decarbonisation
In June 2022, Rentco made a significant move in the electric terminal tractor (ETT) space, marking a pivotal moment in their journey towards decarbonisation. Led by CEO Bob Shier, a dedicated team visited the Terberg HQ in Holland to explore this innovative product. Bob's vision was clear: to spearhead Rentco's entry into the ETT market and drive Australia's transition towards greener logistics solutions.
The team's visit to Holland was followed by a trip to the Terberg factory in Malaysia, responsible for producing ETTs for the Oceania region. Both visits left a lasting impression, and the decision was made to order an initial 12 units. This substantial Capex investment reflected Bob's unwavering belief in the 'build and they will come' principle, a testament to Rentco's confidence in their vision and their track record of 30 years of pioneering efforts.
Today, all 12 units are either on long-term hire or lease, a success that did not come without challenges. Rentco National Business Manager Paul Scott acknowledged that the uptake was initially slower than expected, attributing this to the longstanding reliance on diesel within the transport and logistics sector. However, through perseverance and strategic trials, Rentco began to shift mindsets. Mainfreight was the first to trial the units and was so impressed that they committed to five units, with three already in use and two more being customized in Mainfreight colours for a five-year term. Chem Couriers, a division of Mainfreight, took possession of one of the five units.
Ashley Taylor from Mainfreight highlighted the positive feedback from operators, noting that the ETTs contribute to less fatigue at the end of the day. "The opportunity to decarbonise is a high priority for Mainfreight, and partnering with Rentco was a natural fit," said Ashley.
Buoyed by the success and growing interest in their ETTs, Bob, Paul, and the Rentco team are confident in the product's future. They are preparing to initiate the next phase of their rollout, continuing to drive forward their mission of decarbonising the transport and logistics industry.

This 3-year contract with Sadleirs is a shining example of how we can work together to create a greener future."
A Joint Vision for a Sustainable Future
This partnership between Sadleirs and Rentco is more than just a business agreement; it is a shared vision for a sustainable future. Both companies recognise the importance of adopting green technologies and are dedicated to reducing their environmental impact.
The electric terminal tractor is just one of many steps Sadleirs and Rentco are taking towards sustainability. Together, they are setting a new standard in the logistics industry, demonstrating that environmental responsibility and operational excellence can go hand in hand.
A Positive Impact on the Community
Beyond the environmental benefits, this partnership also has a positive social impact. By choosing electric vehicles, Sadleirs is contributing to improved air quality and reducing noise pollution in the communities they serve. This commitment to bettering the community is a core aspect of both Sadleirs' and Rentco's ESG strategies.
Conclusion

This partnership exemplifies how businesses can collaborate to achieve remarkable ESG outcomes. As Sadleirs and Rentco continue to innovate and lead the way in green logistics, they set a powerful example for the industry, proving that a commitment to sustainability is not only good for the planet but also good for business.

Celebrating John Shier: A Legacy of Leadership and Determination at Rentco Transport Equipment Rentals
After three decades of dedication, innovation, and leadership, John Shier, one half of the original ownership structure and Director of Rentco Transport Equipment Rentals, is set to retire. His remarkable journey with the company has been nothing short of transformative, leaving an indelible mark on the industry and the countless individuals who have had the privilege of working with him.
John didnโt come from this industry. In fact, he spent his early years in the Police Force travelling around the state whilst raising a young family. John enjoyed time at the farm, and will no doubt continue doing so once he officially retires.
Whilst happier to be in the background leaving Bob Shier as the face of the business, Johnโs contribution cannot be undervalued. Less flamboyant of the two brothers, John was a perfect foil for Bob as the business experienced exponential growth.
Johnโs association with Rentco began 30 years ago when the company was still finding its footing in the competitive transport equipment rental market. With a clear vision and an unwavering commitment to excellence, John and brother Bob led the charge in establishing Rentco as a frontrunner in the industry. His strategic insight and hands-on approach ensured that the company not only survived but thrived, even in the face of numerous market challenges.
Under John's stewardship, Rentco experienced significant growth. His innovative thinking and adaptability allowed the company to expand its fleet, diversify its services, and pe*****te new markets. Johnโs ability to anticipate industry trends and pivot accordingly kept Rentco ahead of the curve, consistently meeting and exceeding the expectations of its clients. Known as the Money Man for managing the Budget, job certainly had his foot on the brake when required.
One of John's greatest contributions to Rentco has been his focus on fostering a culture of collaboration and inclusivity. He believed that the success of the company was intrinsically linked to the well-being and development of its employees. John's leadership style was characterised by an open-door policy, where team members felt valued and heard. He invested heavily in people ensuring that everyone at Rentco had the opportunity to grow and succeed.
As John steps down from his role, he leaves behind a company that is stronger and more resilient than ever. His vision and values are deeply embedded in Rentco's DNA, ensuring that the company will continue to thrive in the years to come. The solid foundation he has built will serve as a launchpad for future innovations and successes as was evident when a Private Equity Fund acquired 80% of the business in June last year.
The team at Rentco, along with its partners and clients, extends their deepest gratitude to John for his unparalleled contributions. His legacy is one of relentless pursuit of excellence, innovative thinking, and a deep-seated commitment to the people who make up the Rentco family.
While John's presence will be greatly missed, his influence will undoubtedly continue to guide Rentco. As he embarks on this new chapter, we wish him all the happiness, health, and fulfillment that retirement can bring. Johnโs remarkable journey with Rentco Transport Equipment Rentals may be coming to an end, but his legacy will endure for many years to come. John leaves big shoes to fill but the business is very confident Johnโs son Jamie will run with it in his role as Chief Commercial Officer, working alongside Bob Shier and the team.
Here's to John Shier โ a visionary leader, a dedicated mentor, and a true pioneer in the transport equipment rental industry. Thank you, John, for everything you have done. Your impact will be felt long into the future.
