He has done it again!!!

The 2.5-year old kid in the picture below - which is Marnus Labuschagne - is turning out to be the greatest concussion sub in cricket history.

He built his Test career replacing Steve Smith in 2019 as a concussion sub. Now, after averaging only 24.9 in his last 15 ODIs, being snubbed from the World Cup squad, and walking in to bat at 72/5 (chasing 223) replacing Cameron Green as the concussion sub, Labuschagne steered Australia to a 3-wicket win.

Winning the player-of-the-match award for his 80*, he said: "My mum was adamant last night that I was playing and I said I m not in the team. I guess I have got some weird things that happen around concussion."

Like it kickstarted his Test career, the innings can well be a lifeline to his ODI career as well. He is now just one injury away from breaking into Australia's WC squad and the likes of Smith and Glenn Maxwell are already recovering from injuries.

Labuschagne now averages 76.3 in ODIs in South Africa. Not to forget, he is a South African by birth.

The picture below dates back to 1997. Australia were in South Africa for a 7-match ODI series, the last of which was scheduled to be played in Bloemfontein, Labuschagne's hometown in South Africa.

Marnus, only 2.5 years old back then, visited the ground a day before the match with his father while the South African squad was practising. He was standing beside the nets when the then South Africa coach, the late Bob Woolmer saw him.

Woolmer said: "We need to get you a contract, young man."

He may have said it jokingly but I am pretty sure that Cricket South Africa now think they should have sealed the deal when they had the chance. 6 years later, in 2003, Marnus left South Africa and settled in Australia with his family.

After the net session, Marnus' father asked his son to stand with Shaun Po***ck for a picture. Years later, after Marnus' success in Test cricket and his maiden tour of South Africa as an Australian cricketer, Po***ck was reminded of this picture.

Po***ck said: "I remember this. It was in 1997. We talked about Test cricket. I gave him some tips and he is using them well now"

Pretty sure Polly was joking there. 26 years later, he was in the commentary box last night when Labuschagne ushered Australia home to a 1-0 lead from a hopeless situation.
