On National Volunteer Week, all of us at Samaritans WA want to extend our thanks and gratitude to everyone who volunteers with us. You all make such profound impacts to the lives of others across each of our services.
Volunteers are a vital part of the emotional support that we provide to those reaching out in their toughest moments. While your impact is not always visible, the support you provide is leaving giant footprints in the lives of people who seek our support.
Samaritans have an aim to help build communities in which people have appropriate support to explore how they feel and to build mental wellness. If you would like to find out more about our volunteering opportunities. Find the link in our bio.

Today marks the beginning of Trans Awareness Week. At Samaritans WA we stand proudly with the transgender community-we stand for law reform on gender recognition, we stand for better access to appropriate and supportive health services. We stand to celebrate trans community, we are open to learning and doing better. 🩵🩷🤍
The Luma Project is a groundbreaking initiative, offering a secure sanctuary for young individuals aged 16-24 who are grappling with thoughts of su***de. This landmark service, the first of its kind in Western Australia, is a collaborative effort by Ruah Community Services, Samaritans WA, and has been co-designed and evaluated by the Telethon Kids Institute and The University of Western Australia.
🏡 What We Offer: The Luma Project provides a short-stay, residential program, staffed by people who have lived or living experience of su***de. We're here to support young people with thoughts of su***de, guiding them towards therapeutic activities and helping them develop crucial emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and mindfulness skills.
🌱 A Healing Space: We're not a medical facility or a clinic. Instead, think of us as a calming, home-like environment, a place to heal and connect. Here at the Luma Project, there's no need for a mental health diagnosis to be eligible for our services. You can self-refer, or a referral can come from a family member, support person, or health professional.
Important to Know: The Luma Project specialises in early intervention, and we carefully screen all participants to ensure our services align with their needs.
To see if you fit the eligibility criteria, and to learn more about the service, visit the webpage https://thesamaritans.org.au/the-luma-project/ . If you’d like to refer yourself or someone you know, telephone (08) 6230 3903
*The Luma Project (previously named the Youth Su***de Sanctuary) was made possible thanks to the Mental Health Commission and Lotterywest.

Last Thursday we celebrated another milestone for the Youth Sanctuary – significant support from Lotterywest in the form of $508,000 for the refurbishment of the building.
In partnership with the State Government, Ruah and Telethon Kids Institute, the building will host the state’s first, short-term residential service for young people experiencing thoughts of su***de. The five-bed service will be designed in collaboration with people with lived experience and other stakeholders, and in consideration of trauma-informed design principles.
Thank you to our CEO, Zrinka Highfield, Lucca and Hon. Amber-Jade Sanderson MLA BA for your thoughtful speeches that led to a meaningful celebration for all in attendance.
In partnership with the State Government, Ruah and Telethon Kids Institute we will be offering a new residential service that will support Western Australians aged 16 to 24 who are experiencing suicidal thoughts. Support will be provided by trauma-informed Peer Workers and volunteer Support Counsellors, offering non-medical, person-centred care.
