Rest in peace, James Earl Jones.

One of the most beloved and distinguished actors of our time – he will be remembered for being the voice of Star Wars villain – Darth Vader and King Mufasa in Disney’s The Lion King, among his many career highlights both on the screen and on the stage.

He is pictured here with fellow actors Angela Lansbury and Boyd Gaines at His Majesty's Theatre for Driving Miss Daisy in 2013 - his incredible talent will be forever remembered.

How we recommend making the most out of our balconies on show night:

1. Get here early to enjoy Perth's cityscape at golden hour. ☀️
2. Order interval drinks before the show starts (so you can get some fresh air and make the most of the break between acts). 🍸
3. Enjoy a post-show bev and a yarn - did you have the same favourite/worst moments from the show? 🎭
4. Tag us in your balcony pics - we love to see you lighting them up. 📷

The balconies are for you - we hope you enjoy them!

A joy celebrating some of most loyal patrons for our 120th Anniversary. ❤

As part of His Majesty's Theatre, Perth's 120th Anniversary, we are celebrating some of our most dedicated patrons. These are patrons who have attended the most shows or purchased the most tickets to events at The Maj over the years.

At various shows this year, these patrons were presented with a pack that included a ‘gold ticket’ – redeemable for two tickets to a performance at the venue, a limited-edition His Majesty’s Theatre 120-year keep cup, drink vouchers for two beverages and a hand-written thank you note.

Venue Operations Manager Alex Lehmann presented Bernard Mearns with his gift pack at Rusalka last month. Bernard is one of The Maj’s most prolific and valued attendees – well loved by our Front of House and Box Office staff; in 2024 alone, Bernard has purchased tickets to 11 shows at The Maj and to 30 shows across all ACT venues!

Bernard was also treated to an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the theatre, giving him a sneak peek of the set and back-stage area.

Other recipients of a loyalty pack this year included Paula Hanson, Alida Reitzenstein, Megan Dodsworth, Roderick Allen and Yannis Vrodos.

Our audiences are the heart and soul of our venues - we can’t wait to celebrate more of them throughout this significant year.

Happy Birthday, to our Historian Ivan King OAM.

Ivan’s work in preserving and celebrating the rich tapestry of our past has ensured that future generations of performing arts lovers will remain connected to the heritage and stories that make our building so special.

You can see Ivan bring these stories to life in one of his venue tours or in the various Museum of Performing Arts WA displays around The Maj.

Our heartfelt thanks for everything that you do and the 'Maj'ic that you maintain, Mr King.

Our Story

Since opening on Christmas Eve in 1904, His Majesty's Theatre has become one of Western Australia's most-loved heritage icons.

A stunning example of Edwardian era architecture, the building is the design masterpiece of architect William Wolfe and contractor Gustav Liebe, who constructed the theatre for Perth businessman and one-time Lord Mayor of Perth, Thomas G Molloy.

Built during the Gold Rush boom of the early 20th Century at a cost of 42,000 pounds, His Majesty's Theatre and its adjoining hotel took around two years to complete.

Borrowing architectural elements from the 19th Century theatres of England and Europe, this magnificent creation was described in the theatre's opening night programme as "among the finest of its kind in the Commonwealth".
