A post from the International Halliwick Association (IHA):

"Functional goals and water, written by Yael Yoshei, an Occupational Therapist and a Halliwick lecturer.
As water therapists, we use the unique properties of water to promote function in all areas of life. The buoyancy, turbulence, hydrostatic pressure, and other properties of water allow us to work on functional goals.

What is a functional goal? A functional goal is a statement of intent. When setting a goal, I am stating what I aspire to reach. The goals I focus on are those identified by my client or his/her family members as those that will enable him/her to participate in activities and functions that they consider meaningful.

Take for example Alon (pseudonym), a 12-year-old boy diagnosed with autism and Developmental Coordination Disorder. One of the main goals that the family wanted to emphasize in the treatment was improving Alon's chewing.

After observing Alon during a meal, we can analyse the goal:
In terms of structure and function, swallowing functions are normal. No difficulty was observed in swallowing a variety of textures. However, Alon does not close his lips while eating, so large amounts of food fall out of his mouth while eating. Also, Alon's pronunciation is not clear at times, because he has difficulty pronouncing sounds that require pressing the lips together (B, M, P).

In terms of activities and participation, this causes the family to feel discomfort while eating, especially at meals in public places, because Alon's way of eating is not aesthetic and does not match his age. For those who are not familiar with Alon's way of speaking, it is difficult to understand him because of his pronunciation difficulties.

In terms of personal and environmental factors, the supporting factors are a warm and supportive family that is very involved in treatment, Alon's high motivation, excellent cooperation and very good adjustment to the water.

In terms of the inhibiting factors, there is significant difficulty in learning new tasks and low-quality performance, due to the difficulty in motor planning.

The goal which was set: Alon will chew the food with his mouth closed for at least 30% of the meal time (according to the assessment of the parents and the educational staff) while eating solid food at home and at school, with a verbal reminder 3-4 times during the meal.

So what do we do in the water to promote this goal? Blow bubbles!
Bubbles are created when we blow air or make a sound in water. This is an important point because bubbles can also be produced with an open mouth, while with Alon we want to exhale while contracting the lips. Therefore, we used several exercises:
Blowing on a Halliwkc egg flip. In order for the egg to turn over, one must exhale while contracting the lips.

Blowing while making the sound "Uuuuu". Producing this sound also requires contraction of the lips.

Blowing a bird whistle, as in the picture. The choice of a whistle, rather than a straw, was because straw is usually used for inhaling and since Alon has difficulty planning movement, I didn't want him to confuse the various functions.

Blowing, beyond using the muscles of the mouth, also creates sensory stimulation. Alon feels the bubbles forming on his face while exhaling and the sensation of the lips contracting and closing.

To make the practice fun, we turned each type of practice into a game: who can blow the longest, blowing in turns, blowing strong and weak bubbles, or blowing on a Haliwick Egg until you reach the "goal" (a hoop floating on the surface of the water)..."
