🌸 You may have noticed the Native Wisteria [Callerya megasperma] has just burst into flower!

Native Wisteria is a robust vine suited to tropical and sub-tropical climates. Flowering in late winter to spring, the gorgeous purple and white flower clusters will attract bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. Flowers are followed by large, distinctive, furry seed pods - which you'll probably notice hanging about very soon - that are very easy to propagate from, just wait for these to pop open, then plant the seeds and wait.

Hardy, and a vigorous grower in suitably moist environments, but easily controlled with careful pruning, the Native Wisteria will grow beautifully along strong supports such as large trees and pergolas - it makes a lovely feature plant and will by inclination, form a canopy. Even the older stems, covered in a rich red-purple flaky bark, add to the beauty of this plant.

It's one of our favourites here, and from the photos you can see why! It's a beautiful addition to any native garden! We sell them in larger, 70mm size tubes for $6.50 each 🌸

The Hinter Hub is open 8.30am-3.30pm weekdays and 8am-1.30pm Saturdays.

πŸͺ»In flower now!

Native Rosemary [Westringia eremicola]

A hardy shrub to 1.5m tall, Native Rosemary is one tough cookie. Happy in full sun to part shade, this drought-tolerant plant flowers throughout the year and can last through extended dry periods and tolerate moderate frost. It's happy in clay, loam or sand, and needs minimal watering... it's one of the more low-maintenance aussie natives!

The mauve flowers contrast beautifully with pale green rosemary-like foliage (however, be advised the leaves are not edible!), making it a great ornamental plant to use as a feature or even for garden edging as it responds very well to regular pruning and can be kept low and bushy like ours at the front of the shop.
Flowers will attract pollinators, especially the Rayed Blue Butterfly.

We sell Westringia in our midi sized pots for $4 a pop!

The Hinter Hub is open 8.30am-3.30pm weekdays and 8am-1.30pm Saturdays.

We are proud to share with you all our community library recently installed in Station Place at the πŸ’šπŸ™ŒπŸ“š

Last year Noosa Landcare were lucky to receive funding from the community benefit fund to help us with a small passion project focused on community mental health and wellbeing.

With the help of many wonderful staff and community members, this beautiful community library was created. Check out the gorgeous murals painted by our very own (and very talented!) Landcare personnel! πŸ“šπŸ› πŸ–Œ

Community libraries serve as hubs where individuals can come together, share resources, and build relationships with others who share their love of reading and learning.

Through participation in a community library, people will not only expand their access to books but also contribute to the collective enrichment and empowerment of each other and the community. It's a beautiful example of how small actions can have a big impact on creating a vibrant and connected community.

We would like to give a BIG thanks to the Cooroy RSL for their support to this project, to Kin Kin local Nick Thompson for the donation of books to start the library and Danny from β€˜The Paint Place’ for donating the coloured exterior paint. We would like to extend our thanks to the wonderful Noosa Landcare staff who worked together to bring this project to fruition – Jaymie Suares, Jamie Missen (builder extraordinaire πŸ”¨), Kim Maddison, Darrin Barden, SQW trainees, artists – Sophie Chegwyn, Brent Whitworth, Kailey Pearce and Belinda Burke.

Please take a book or leave one for others to enjoy! Happy reading πŸ’šπŸ“–

🌿 Sea Parsley, [Apium prostratum], also sometimes called Sea Celery is a great little Bush Tucker groundcover we've recently added to our nursery!

It's a fantastic, fresh, flavoursome herb and, like traditional Italian parsley, adds a peppery zing to your dishes. Grow and harvest like you would any herb - pick or cut the stems often throughout growing season and towards the end of summer, the small, white flowers will produce copious amounts of seed for your next sowing season.

Sea Celery is drought-tolerant, frost-tolerant and does love the sun, but, like most other herbs, will still thrive in dappled shade. Plant in an area with a soil mix that drains easily, and water well throughout the year. Growing naturally in coastal areas, it's also happy in sandy soils and makes an excellent container or hanging basket plant.

The Hinter Hub is open 8.30am-3.30pm weekdays and 8am-1.30pm Saturdays.

🌱 We visited our local Pomona Kindy this week to help plant out a Bush Tucker garden for the kidlets! 🌱

Words and photos by Pomona Kindy

Today, we welcomed a special guest Bernice from Landcare to share the rich traditions and knowledge of Bush Tucker. This experience aimed to deepen our understanding of Indigenous Australian culture and support our commitment to cultural diversity and sustainable practices.

Our Landcare guest introduced the children to various bush tucker plants, explaining how they can be used for both food and for creating useful items like baskets. The children were engaged in hands-on activities, planting and watering the bush foods and learning about their traditional uses. This experience provided a unique opportunity for cultural exchange and environmental education. During the morning, the children had much knowledge to share of their own- Rex told us that he "has a mint garden at home, but it's different to the native mint Bernice brought". Fenn told us "They put mint in toothpaste"! Audrey shared "Mum cuts back the plants but they keep growing and growing". One of the plants Bernice brought today is called a Mila Mila- "Hey that's my name", Mila smiled.

Once Bernice had placed the bush tucker in their planting spaces she ventured down to our bush kinder space where she shared her knowledge and identified some other bush tucker and native species we have growing there. Today's experience was a powerful way to support cultural diversity in our program. It allowed children to connect with Indigenous traditions, learn about sustainable practices, and appreciate the rich cultural heritage of Australia. It also provided an opportunity to meet with and build relationships with our local community members from Landcare.

Today we fostered connections to the land, helping children understand the importance of biodiversity and their role in protecting and sustaining their environment. This learning story highlights our commitment to inclusive education, respect for the diverse backgrounds of all our children and families, and our dedication to environmental stewardship.

Another yummy Bush Tucker we've been loving for a while now is the Native Currant [Carissa ovata]

The Native Currant is a tough cookie! It's hardy, frost and drought tolerant, adaptable to a variety of soil types and is happy in both full and filtered sun.

It also always looks good! With an open, sprawling habit, bright green, glossy leaves all year round and sweet-smelling clusters of white flowers in Spring and Summer, it's not just the edible fruits that have us digging (excuse the gardening pun!) this great little shrub.

Birds love it too! The thorny thickets provide good small bird habitat and they also love the fruit. Butterflies are attracted to the flowers and it's a host plant for the Common Crow butterfly and moths including the Hawk Moth. Carissa ovata can be used as a good, low, prickly hedging or screening plant.

While the fruits are edible and can be used in a variety of dishes, when harvesting you do need to ensure they are completely ripe and there's no milky sap residue (which can be poisonous).

We currently stock Carissa ovata in our 90mm Maxi pots.

The Hinter Hub is open 8.30am-3.30pm weekdays and 8am-1.30pm Saturdays.

Cryptocarya laevigata, also known as the Glossy Laurel or Red-Fruited Laurel, is a lovely rainforest understory shrub or small tree growing to 10-15m tall, but most often seen around 6m.

It's an attractive addition to any garden, with an ornamental, bushy growth habit and a dense crown of glossy, dark green leaves, it produces small, perfumed, cream flowers in Summer followed by striking bright red fruits that will attract birds, butterflies and other insects to your garden

Preferring filtered light or semi-shade, it's adaptable to a variety of soil types but does do better in moist, well-watered environments.

We currently have Cryptocarya laevigata available in our 90mm Maxi pots.

Keeping the Bush Tucker theme going, back in the nursery this week is the delicious Bush Mint [Mentha satureioides]! Yum!

Native to Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia, the Bush Mint is smaller and more delicate than other native mint varieties and has so many uses! Use it fresh in cooking - it's excellent in salads, sauces and desserts - and dried or fresh, it makes a yummy tea! You can also add it into homemade insect repellents, body scrubs and skincare. It's a versatile plant!

Bush Mint grows best, and the leaves are at their sweetest, during the cooler months. In summer it can die back when the weather gets too hot, but don't worry if that happens, it self-seeds and will bounce back once conditions become more favourable! Flowering during the Spring-Summer months, the tiny white blossoms will attract bees and other pollinators to your garden.

Creeping as it grows, it can get to 20cm in height, but most often will work well as a groundcover in shady, moist areas. If left to its own devices it can take over, but the good news is that it's an excellent container plant and will thrive in pots, plus, with a good prune here and there, it's very easy to keep under control.

We currently stock these in our Midi size pots for $4 each.
