Wolfe Creek Crater
Wolfe Creek Crater was a pretty big detour as we were heading south, but we lucked out with the Tanami Road as the first 40klms was being graded and also sealed. This made the drive so much easier. Unfortunately we missed the sunset, but we did do the walk on Sunrise. This place needs to be put on your list of to-do's if you like the desert and outback. Girraween National Park.....its a very special place for me as I got to spend a lot of time there with my family. A part of my Nan and Pops farm is now part of the National Park, but their main property wasn't far from the park (at the end of Wren Lane) and is still there today. I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time there before I started school going up there to "help" (not sure I was much help) pick fruit and all sorts of things. I learnt how to drive a tractor, taught how to swim, to handle a rifle and so many other amazing things. This area will always have a special place in my heart. Apart from this personal connection, Girraween has some amazing hikes, stunning scenery and great camp grounds. It's a place that can be bitterly cold in winter with snow and hot during summer so you can swim in the beautiful creeks. Lakefield to Cairns is an amazingly beautiful road trip!! The Bloomfield Track is one way of going....although it's not recommended to tow a van through.....but we did it anyway 😊 We loved the stop at the iconic pub The Lions Den, the swimming out the back was refreshing and the food was great. Being so late in the season the campground was quiet so we were able to have a great campsite. In Cairns we caught up with friends and family and grabbed a couple of new tyres for the van which we managed to destroy, 1 coming off the Jardine Ferry?!?! This part of November saw us crossing the Jardine River and heading to Pajinka!!! The northern most point of mainland Australia!!! We were just a little excited.... We visited the Croc Tent first, who were amazing. They let us know that Punsand Bay Campground may be closed due to their end of year break up party, they tried calling them but no luck so we headed to Roonga Point to camp, it was a great choice!!! The other camp while north of the Jardine Ferry was Mutee Head. Both free camps had the most exceptional coastal views, and we had them all to ourselves. We did day trips out of these camps, doing the five beaches run and a drive out to where the Jardine River meets the ocean, plus also some historical sites around the top end. And of course we did the beautiful walk out to the Tip!! November started out pretty cruisy, but it turned into a very busy month doing lots of klms and seeing some amazing things. We left Mackay and headed for Airlie Beach. We had Niks birthday to celebrate early in the month which we had planned to stay in Airlie Beach for and in particular visit Whitehaven Beach on her birthday which was amazing!!!! We really didn't know what we were going to do after Airlie as it was getting late in the season for the North of QLD...but after staying in Airlie for a few days, checking the weather and talking to a couple of people that had just gotten back from Cape York, we made the decision to do the run up and chance the rain. What a great decision this turned out to be. 😊 I've been to the Cape on 2 previous occasions, the first time there were early in the season with plenty of people about, the 2nd time in October 7 years ago, was pretty good as it was a lot quieter. The November run....OMG it was sensational!!!! We had the Cape almost to ourselves!!!! We had to cover a lot of kms from Airlie pretty quick as the weather window was good and may change. We had a quick stopover in Townsville to visit family, who took us to the amazing Crystal Falls where we enjoyed a swim along with the natural rockslides. From there it was a solid day driving as we rolled into Hann River Roadhouse north of Laura late at night and left at 5:30am the next morning aiming to get to Elliot Falls. One year on the road today! Time has flown by!!! This time last year we made our way out of our hometown of Port Macquarie NSW to travel this amazing country we live in. Our first stop wasn’t too far up the road to a beautiful coastal town we regularly visited from Port, Hat Head. Hat Head is one of our favourite spots on the Mid North Coast. We spent a few days here farewelling family and close friends before making our way further north. With both of us living on the MNC for quite some time, we’d ventured to most places on the north coast over the years, so hand picked the ones we wanted to stop as we headed north. These included a stop at Red Rock, Byron Bay, Gold Coast and eventually the Sunshine coast for more catch ups with friends and family, along with lots of other random spots in between. The first few weeks of October was pretty much farewells along with celebrating a close friends wedding. How many farewells can you have right 😂😂......a lot apparently....... From there we headed further North, eventually landing at Mackay at the end of October. We visited so many great places it's hard to list them all here. Over the next twelve days we’ll highlight where we visited each month each day until present. Twin Falls Escarpment walk was so picturesque!!! We started out a little late for us but managed to beat the heat....just. Thankfully the creek on top of the escarpment that feeds the Twin Falls was flowing and the water was amazing....I would recommend taking swimmers so as not to cause too many surprises for other hikers 😂 The walk was graded difficult and it was for the first kilometre, but after that it was relatively easy. The kilometre past the falls along the creek was beautiful and very worth the extra effort. A great spot for a dip and some lunch.
