Literal thinking!

Children can get easily frustrated when learning new skills. This is exacerbated when they are in learning environments where they are constantly watched and evaluated; where they are punished and shamed for making mistakes. They don’t feel safe to be imperfect.

It’s not just about developing a growth mindset. It’s about creating more safety as well. They need both. When they feel that it’s safe to mess up and try again, there’s less of a need to be so hard on themselves.

We can remember this in our own parenting as well. We need a growth mindset in our Untigering practice. “This is hard, but I’m making changes.” “Frustration is normal. I’ve got this.” We resist shame and remind ourselves that we are safe and loved, despite our mistakes. 💗

Posted • We have all been there when you are learning something new, and the overwhelming emotions surface. When our kids and teens experience it, they can spiral into anxiety, saying to themselves things like

👉 "I am a failure."

👉"I can't do this!"

👉"Everyone will be so disappointed."

👉 "I am stupid."

None of the above statements are true, but anxiety lies to us.

When your kids get frustrated, encourage them to repeat these helpful self-talk phrases!
