St Canice's Parish

St Canice's is a Jesuit parish in the heart of Sydney. We seek to build a hope-filled future for all.

“Education is the key to improving everyone’s future prospects,” said Julie Sanders after her visit to Railaco Timor-Leste in 2019.

NOSSEF plays a vital role in educating the youth of Railaco and developing them to be
future leaders of Timor-Leste in the Jesuit tradition.

Over the past 21 years, our dynamic but relatively small parish has raised over A$1.1 million to support the daily on-the-ground requirements of Railaco Jesuit Mission through funding health, nutrition and education programs.

By becoming a recurring donor, you help our sister parish in Timor-Leste to ensure that children receive a nutritious meal, families are able to see a doctor, and students receive the best secondary education.

St Canice’s Railaco Program Ambassador Michael Musgrave reflects on the transformational impact that his friendship with the people of Railaco has had.

In large part thanks to Michael’s stewardship of the program, our little parish has raised over A$1.1 million to support the daily on-the-ground requirements of Railaco Jesuit Mission: ensuring that children receive a nutritious meal, families are able to see a doctor, and students receive the best secondary education.

Michael is returning to Timor-Leste later this month not only to spend time in Railaco, but also to attend the 125th Anniversary of the first Portuguese Jesuits arriving to establish a Mission up in the mountains in Soibada.

By becoming a recurring donor, you can ensure the critical works of the Railaco Jesuit Mission continue.

Following a hard-fought fight for Independence more than 20 years ago, we have been supporting the people of Railaco in our sister parish of Our Lady of Fatima on their long road to building better lives.

In this time, our little parish has raised over A$1.1 million to support the daily on-the-ground requirements of Railaco Jesuit Mission: ensuring that children receive a nutritious meal, families are able to see a doctor, and students receive the best secondary education.

By becoming a monthly ‘recurring’ donor, you can ensure these critical works continue into the future.

This month Pope Francis asks us to pray for those who are sick. Through July, we pray together "that the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick grant the Lord’s strength to those who receive it and to their loved ones, and that it may become for everyone an ever more visible sign of
compassion and hope."

"The homeless, the hungry and the lonely in Sydney converge at lunchtime. St Canice’s Kitchen, which has been operating for 35 years, is their safe place."

David McMahon from the Australian Jesuits has written a beautiful article based on interviews with some of the incredible guests who are the lifeblood of our kitchen.

On the longest night of the year, also known as the winter solstice, you are invited to commemorate all individuals who have died while experiencing homelessness in the past year.

Sadly, for many people experiencing homelessness, this will be their only commemoration.

As a community, we hope to raise awareness of the need to end street sleeping, as well as the experience of homelessness, especially during the cold winter months, when higher numbers of deaths occur.

A text of Fr General adapted from his homily on the Feast of the Sacred Heart 2024

The Society of Jesus cannot exist if its heart is not in tune with the heart of Jesus.

This means to place ourselves on our knees before the Father so that we may be strengthened through faith, in our hearts and in the heart of the Society.
