Games for English

Kirsty James

In addition to the verbal games outlined in Pavlina’s article (In The Dark – Word Games for Home Education), there are many options for pen and pencil games, as well as card, board and online games for students of all ages. Some games focus on specific skills such as spelling or vocabulary, whilst others are broader and include soft skills such as creativity and problem solving.
Pen and paper games have the advantage of being portable and inexpensive. These are ideal for when you are stuck in the doctor’s waiting room, or in down time between activities.

A week in the life of our home educating family… (Otherways 171, Feb 2022)

By Bridget Muhrer

We’ve just completed our very first year of home educating, and my six-year-old son K is excited to be starting Grade 1 (many home educating families don’t talk about school grades with their kids, but it feels right for us). When we first planned to start, K had no siblings, and our approach was to be a bit more structured. Then along came his now almost two-year-old brother S, and the ideas of structure thankfully went out the window.

🧗🏻‍♀️ At the Tokyo Olympics one of our Home Ed Alumni, Oceania Mackenzie, competed in the Sports Climbing Event. 🧗🏻‍♀️

This year she will be doing the same in Paris! 😀

"In 2023, after a demanding World Cup bouldering series taking in events at Hachioji, Seoul, Salt Lake City, Prague, Brixen in Italy and Austrias’s Innsbruck, Oceania was ranked seventh in the world."

You can read a bit about Oceania in an article written for HEN a couple of years ago here: https://home-ed.vic.edu.au/home-educated-olympian/

You can read the latest about her here on the Official Olympic page: https://www.olympics.com.au/olympians/oceania-mackenzie/

It looks like the Sports Climbing Events will start on August 5th - Keep an eye on the schedule so that you can watch her in action. It's pretty amazing to see!

I’m not a teacher, so how can I teach my children? (Otherways 172 - May 2022)

This answer to an often asked question by newbie home educators was kindly shared with us by an anonymous member

Home Educators often get asked how we, as parents, can be effective academic teachers of our children compared to a trained teacher. Prospective home-ed parents often worry about how they could possibly teach their child/ren effectively and provide opportunities for any career their child chooses in the future.

The role of every parent is to facilitate their child’s learning and provide for and encourage their child’s educational journey. For most of the population, this means choosing a school for their child when they are around five years old. For others, at the start of or during the school years, it means choosing home education. Up until that point, depending on family circumstances, our children’s education may have been parent-led, involved childcare or preschool, or may have been a mix.
