Re-thinking Sustainability and the Green Transition 12/04/2023

Did you know 10,000s of new mines are needed for the Green Transition? Come along to this free online seminar by A/Prof Simon Michaux (Geometallurgy) to learn more about mining and minerals in the green transition 🌿.

Thursday 27 April 2023
4-5pm AEST
Register for this free, online event

The University of Tasmania is the top ranked university in the world for climate action and is committed to sustainability for a just and viable future, across operations, research, and teaching. However, new challenges are emerging:

- Limited quantities of minerals for producing renewable energy technologies
- Substantial carbon and ecological footprint of renewable technologies
- Child and slave labour in mining minerals used in renewable technologies

Simon Michaux is renowned for his plain-speaking on the Green Transition, describing minerals as the ‘new oil’ and identifying Green Transition plans as ‘logistically impractical’. In this seminar, he will detail his research and provide insights on an alternative plan for transforming our relationship between energy, minerals, and industrialization. Simon works with Geological Survey of Finland (Geologian Tutkimuskeskus) in the Circular Economy Solutions unit, with qualifications in physics and geology and a background in the Australian mining industry.
