The 3 piece oil control ring provides an elegant solution for removing the excess motor oil of the cylinders walls. The tension created by expander (think of it as a spring) pushes the rails against the cylinder walls, and the corrugated design of the expander allows that oil to pass through and return to the crankcase via the drain back holes in the piston.
