August1979 was when Holden’s Peter Brock, Matt Phillip and Noel Richards drove to what would be named as Peters Proudest Motorsport Achievement. It was the 1979 Repco Reliability Trial.
When Holden decided to attack the Round Australia Rally they Hired GSA’s George Shepheard to build and manage the team where they ran three cars.
It was where they debuted the Holden Commodore in a world class field of 167 entrants with roads doing a lap of Australia in what was a 19,000km journey on tracks and forest roads many would consider un passable.
Holden would have been the most prepared team Having George build cars for not only themselves but other teams to purchase and run. Competition was very strong with Factory entries coming from Porsche, Volvo, Audi and Peugeot. And to achieve 1st 2nd and 3rd Outright was nothing short of amazing.
2nd Outright was Australian Rally Champion Drivers Barry Ferguson and Wayne Bell navigated by Dave Boddy, and in 3rd International Drivers Shekhar Mehta and Rauno Aaltonen and journalist Navigator Barry Lake .
In 1995 Holden contracted George once again to build cars for them for the event in which Holden won again against the 4wd turbo cars that were listed as favourites Champion driver Ed Ordynski and Ross Runnalls took the victory in a Holden VR Commodore.
GSA are closed today with a public holiday and back on deck 730 am Tuesday… Have a great day…
