Craig Quinlivan Myotherapist
Workshop series National presenter
Non Manipulative Structural Correction
Myotherapy/Remedial massag
It's been an 'interesting' previous 9 months. Caught covid, and I'm still recovering.
I'm sorry that i haven't been able to share my passion for education in the field of Massage and Myotherapy, but that's about to change. I'm hoping to get some short have day workshops out as soon as brain and body allow. Talk soon😁
The final day here at the National Conference in Glenelg. There has been so many exciting and inspiring therapists that I have had the privilege to meet this weekend. Our industry is on the rise and its most definitely an exciting time to be a part of it.
There was a big announcement last night at the Gala about where the next conference will be😁. Can you guess by the pic🤣. Hope to see you there.
This coming weekend is the
Masssage and Myotherapy Australia National Conference in Glenelg, South Australia.
I'll be there presenting an 'Introduction to, and the importance of manual joint mobilisations' this shows why a joint mobility investigation and treatment should be a priority for manual therapists.
Joint mob's are a huge part of my treatment philosophy, and an important conversation around the understanding of the efficacy, accuracy and effects achieved with targeted joint mobs is a part of the presentation.
Give me a shout out if you're going. Hope to see you there!
Last chance...again😁.

World first full body fascial plastination project by .worlds and .
The body is an amazing piece of machinery.
The fascia is the supporting structure of the contractile unit.
It is what give the muscles the defined shape within which to grow. If the superficial fascial compartment ruptures, when in a relaxed state the muscle will engorge and may appear many times larger. As the muscle contracts, it returns to normal size.
There we have it.
No treatments to unvaccinated people till December
Gladys, piloting NSW through the pandemic: I think I've got this.
NSW parliment:.......
We are creatures of habit in more ways that one. When we do a lot of something, our body will get better at doing that, for better or for worse.
Do too much right handed actions. You body will get better at supporting the right side, sometimes at the expense of the left. This creates movement patterns and fascial support patterns. If continued, without opposing action or exercise, it creates a pattern of dysfunction.
We can use these patterns to determine what is creating the problem.
A body will easily move further into a dysfunctional pattern than out of it.
Find the movement they can do and what they can't. The action of moving into a pattern is what is causing the problem.
ie, R lumbar stiff. Cant sidebend Left. Can sidebend right.
Question to patient. " what are you doing that puts you into this Right sidebent position?"
Hint: ask about how they curl up on the couch😆.

Quick fix Tuesday.
Know anyone with sinus issues? Hayfever sufferer?
Here is a great trick to decompress the sinus and get a sometimes dramatic rush of drainage. Not a bad idea to warn the patient first😄.
Locate the anterior edge of the Masseter, just below the cheek bone. If you clench your teeth it will pop up like a vertical ridge. Push firmly into the top of the masseter,on the border of the cheek bone, toward the ear.
Use you other hand to gently traction the ear laterally.
Hold this for 10-20 seconds and repeat for the other side.

Getting strong. Getting fit. Getting functional is a continual work in progress. It is a long, slow process but so worth the commitment. Help me, help you. Do your god damn exercises😆.
A timely reminder for everyone that tendons don't like sudden increases in training volume. Fastest way to develop a tendonopathy is to overload too quickly in weight, volume or intensity.
Always follow the S.A.I.D principle. Specific Adation to Imposed Demand.
Find a volume and intensity your body can tolerate, and then repeat. When this becomes easier, slowly increase.
ALWAYS watch your form. If you cant repetitively perform a movement, you shouldn't be increasing demand.
We got your back. Cause seriously, someone needs to.

Improvise. Adapt. Overcome.
You know the meme👊😁. Lockdown 2.0 for NSW.
In the meantime, my treatment table has become a sit/stand desk as I update the existing workshops and develop the next group. After 20+years standing at this table treating, this kind of feels right😃.

Anatomy time!
How many of the muscles or structure can you correctly identify?
If you hadn't noticed, anatomy texts usually present an extremely sanitised and convenient layout for us to digest. Real life isn't like that. Even this cadaver has been meticulously prepared by removing extraneous structures to show us the desired result.
Makes you appreciate the skills of a good surgeon😁.

It only works if it's shared"
I consistently hear therapists saying they don't bother to prescribe exercises😳. Why do you think this is the case? Lets hear some for's and against.
I can't say this enough. If you're not assessing, you're guessing.
There are a thousand different ways to assess so start simple. It's quite often the best.
Choose a movement related to the area in question. For shoulders, try pure arm abduction. Record their range of motion result, Pre and post treatment. Did you change the result with treatment?
Have you achieved a difference?
How much time did you spend treating Vs how much difference did it create.
It can be confidence shattering to do a dose of treatment and make no difference. Get used to it.
Study more, learn more.
If you truly want to help people, you need to quantifiably justify your treatment and results with measured outcomes.

Non-Manipulatve Structural Correction.
Saturday and sunday 3rd and 4th July in Albury NSW. Venue to be confirmed
If you are a manual therapist, would you like a systematic process to assess and treat the dysfunction that occurs in and around the joints of the lumbar spine and pelvic region?
Do you understand what problems these limitations in movement can create to the neuromuscular function?
Did you realise that if the boney structure is moving correctly, you could see half the soft tissue dysfunction just disappear through reduction in neuromuscular inhibition and functional range increases
These techniques allow for greater results and faster treatment that is easier on the practitioners hands and body.
Get to the base of the cause quickly and effectively using The NMSC approach.
Content includes an over-view of bony landmarks and assessment techniques to accurately determine dysfunctional joint patterns in passive and active functional movements.
The therapist will be shown easy to use assessments, MET's, joint mobilisation and correction techniques for the Lumbo-Sacro-Pelvic area. It includes corrections for the lumbar spine, ilia, sacrum and femoro-acetabular(Hip) joint.
This will give the therapist an understanding of 'normal' arthro-kinematics and the ability to correct many common conditions that can be the root cause of musculo-skeletal pain. To compliment these corrections a comprehensive range of myofascial release techniques are included to ensure the musculature, joints and structure are allowed to realise its new functional potential. Treatment areas include Sacroiliac joints, P***c Symphysis, specific Sacral Mobility, Lumbar vertebrae Facet Joints, femoro-acetabular joint and also the associated major musculature.
Morning tea, lunch, tea and coffee provided along with comprehensive instructional notes to take home to make sure you get the most value from your time spent.

Fast twitch muscle fibres produce fast, big power quickly. Think sprinter or power lifter🏋♂️. Slow twitch muscle fibres produce less power but have a more consistant force production for long periods of time (Think marathon runner🏃♀️).
Here's where it gets tricky. Fast, low power movements (like fast walking or spinning on a bike) use slow twitch fibres but quickly. Walking up a hill or climbing on a bike (hard, slow action) uses fast twitch fibres slowly😄. Not confusing at all🤣.
Aerobic, endurance style exercise uses typically slow twitch (type1) fibres.
Shorter duration heavy anaerobic workouts use fast twitch (type2) fibres.
How many of these fibres are used and how effective/powerful they are depends on what sort of training you have been doing. We develop what we train👌. There alre also fibres that can be swayed in how they work and yes they can change sides between slow and fast twitch, depends on how you train.
This is a ridiculously simplified abreviation of muscle fibre type, but it's a start😁.
As with most processes in the body, there is always more to know, but know this. If you aren't exercising, you ARE getting weaker.
Get out there and do something. Anything is a start and its always better than nothing.

Take a moment, breathe and think about the things you believe and what you say.
20 years ago treatment of fascia wasn't really a thing. The sacrum and SI joints had no function. The cranial sutures were fused. Ice baths were considered optimal for recovery.
These are things that were being taught in universities and we didn't know any better. We didn't know what we know now.
A heavily polarised controversial opinion that goes against the grain sure does get a lot of traction on social media. People love to be the 'stand out, lone wolf'. Makes them feel special. But If there is no factual basis for that viewpoint, it is just another biased inaccuracy.
If someone is roostering a specific opinion. Get all the facts and information before you jump on board😁. Chill before you feed these monsters.
We can do better. Our industry can do better.
Ps. This is not about anyone in particular. It is about ill informed loud mouthed influencers tainting the view point of young therapists.
Lateral patella dislocation.
If you see someone doing this, please stop them!
In most cases, just simply passively straightening the knee will rest in a return to normal alignment. Hitting the patella while dislocated can create permanent damage to the cartilage of the patella and knee.
