🌬️ Ready to breathe better? Embrace Diaphragmatic Breathing!

Have you heard of diaphragmatic breathing? It's time to rediscover this natural and powerful technique for improved well-being.

Diaphragmatic breathing engages your diaphragm—a large, dome-shaped muscle beneath your lungs—to assist with deep breathing.

How to do it: Find a comfortable position, sit or lie down. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. Inhale slowly through your nose, feeling your abdomen rise. Exhale gently through your mouth, feeling your belly fall. Focus on making your belly rise and fall with each breath.

Ready to reconnect with your natural rhythm? Book an appointment here at myOsteo and we can provide guidance on mastering diaphragmatic breathing. Call 07 5473 9300 or click www.myosteo.com.au to get started 🙌🏽

💡 Did you know that the most commonly broken bone in the body is the clavicle (AKA the collarbone)? This slender, S-shaped bone connects your arm to your body and helps stabilise your shoulder. It's particularly prone to fractures due to its location and the fact that we often use our arms to break falls. 🦴

Clavicle fractures are usually caused by sports injuries, falls, or car accidents. Fortunately, they typically heal well with rest, a sling, and the help of a good osteopath. Got questions about bone health or a recent injury? Call 07 5473 9300 or click www.myosteo.com.au to book an appointment at myOsteo.

[Interesting trivia: babies are sometimes born with broken clavicles, but don’t worry - they heal much quicker than adults!]

🦴 Fun Facts About Your Bones 🦴

👉 Constant Renewal: Your bones are constantly renewing themselves. Every 7-10 years, you essentially get a completely new skeleton!

👉 Storage & Release: Bones act as a storage unit for minerals like calcium and phosphorus, releasing them into the bloodstream when needed to maintain balance.

👉 Bone Soundwaves: Bones can transmit sound. Your skull conducts sound waves to your inner ear, allowing you to hear yourself speak more clearly than others do.

👉 Old Bones: Some of your bones started forming before you were born. The ossification of bones begins in the second trimester of pregnancy and continues through adolescence.

🌱 Phytochemicals: The Hidden Heroes 🌿

Beyond vitamins and minerals, nutrient-rich foods contain phytochemicals—bioactive compounds crucial for health.

Flavonoids: Found in berries, citrus fruits, and dark chocolate, flavonoids have antioxidant properties that protect against oxidative stress and inflammation, reducing chronic disease risk.

Sulforaphane: Broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts are rich in sulforaphane, supporting detoxification pathways and potentially preventing cancer.

Lycopene: Tomatoes, watermelon, and pink grapefruit owe their colour to lycopene, linked to reduced prostate cancer and heart disease risk.

💊 Why not just take a supplement? Supplements can't replace a balanced diet! The way phytochemicals work in the body is still not fully understood, but we know that a whole food approach provides a matrix of nutrients and phytochemicals, optimising bioavailability. So, eat the rainbow!

But what if you (or a picky-eater in your family) dislike vegetables? Share your tips for sneaking nutritious veggies into your family dinners below 👇🏽

Lifestyle Tip: Is Your Mattress Working for You? 🛏️

Did you know your mattress plays a crucial role in your spinal health? Here are some expert guidelines from the osteopaths at myOsteo:

👉 Support is Key: A mattress that's too soft or too firm can lead to back pain. The right mattress for you supports your spine's natural curves.

👉 Comfort Matters: Choose a mattress that offers firm support with a comfortable top layer to cushion pressure points. Memory foam or hybrid mattresses are generally good options for most people.

👉 Tailored to Your Needs: Your sleeping position matters! Side sleepers may prefer a softer surface, while back and stomach sleepers might need a firmer option. Your size and weight also play a part in the decision making.

👉 Don’t Forget Your Pillow: Your pillow should keep your neck aligned with your spine. Back sleepers may prefer a medium-firm pillow, side sleepers a firmer one, and stomach sleepers a softer, thinner option.

Got questions or need more personalised advice? Call 07 5473 9300 or click www.myosteo.com.au to schedule an appointment with our osteopaths and get ready for some quality sleep afterwards!

📚 Phrase of the Day: Trigger Point 📖

We all know what a trigger point is. But did you know the phrase’s fascinating history?

Dr. Janet Travell coined the phrase in the 1940s.

She combined the word trigger, which came into English in the 17th century from the Dutch word trekken meaning “to pull” and point, which has its roots in the Latin word “punctum”, meaning “a dot” to describe a specific spot in a muscle that, when pressed, triggers pain elsewhere. Quite the linguistic journey for something so central to osteopathy!

Bonus trivia: Dr Travell was President John F. Kennedy’s personal physician!

At myOsteo our osteopaths are skilled in identifying and treating these areas to relieve pain and improve your overall well-being. Call 5473 9300 or click www.myosteo.com.au/booking to make an appointment and discover the benefits for yourself!

🚨 Hamstring Strain Info Alert! 🚨

Did you know? Hamstring strains are caused by rapid muscle contraction or stretching

Soccer players, beware! You're most at risk. But it's not just sports – even everyday activities can lead to hamstring woes.

Know your muscles: The hamstrings (biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus) are crucial for knee flexion and hip extension.

Why do they happen? Imbalances between quadriceps and hamstrings play a big role. Plus, age and previous injuries up the risk.

Stay ahead: Warm up well, keep flexible, and balance those muscles. And if pain strikes then call us on 07 5473 9300 right away or book online at www.myosteo.com.au/booking
