Meet Sim 👋🏼

We are excited to welcome a new member to the TLC team, the delightful Sim!

You might have seen her around over the past couple of weeks, learning the ropes and sharing her big heart with all our valued customers. Sim has recently moved to the Sunny Coast from Melbourne along with her husband, pet dog and household of parrots 🦜

Sim rescues parrots and is a self-confessed animal lover, feeling happiest when out in nature amongst the trees and wild animals 🌳

If not working, enjoying a cold plunge or caring for animals, you’ll find Sim working up a sweat at the local CrossFit gym! CrossFit has been a passion and athletic pursuit for Sim for over 10 years, and is a non-negotiable part of her life which she values and enjoys immensely 💪🏼

Sim’s other passion is pasta, so if you have a great pasta recipe or know of a fabulous Italian eatery for Sim to try, she’ll be all ears! 🍝

Be sure to say hi to Sim next time you’re in for a visit, and have a little extra patience while she gets to know your name and recovery preferences. We feel blessed to have Sim join the team and know you’ll love the TLC she can give!

Like this post to say hi to Sim and to welcome our newest member of the team 👍🏼

Flame Cupping VS Dry Needling: Which one is better?

It's a common question we get asked here at TLC, especially given our resident masseuse can include either dry-needling or flame-cupping in your remedial massage at no extra charge. What's the answer?

Both are amazing! But for different reasons....

Some specific muscles respond better to dry needling, others respond better to cupping, so it is highly dependent on the individual and your specific needs and pains. For example, if you're experiencing neck or shoulder pain, best believe that dry needling your upper traps will be a game changer!

It is best to talk to our masseuse, Meagan, to pinpoint the best treatment plan for you. Otherwise, we generally recommend you try out both and see what your body responds to the best. Every person is different and this is one of the best ways to individualise your massage care to help you rehab and/or recover as quickly and efficiently as possible ✨

To book your remedial massage with flame-cupping or dry needling, or to book your stand-alone needling session, head to: https://recharge-recovery-massagebeauty.square.site/

DOMs can really mess up your training schedule, but it shouldn’t be an excuse anymore!

Planning your training schedule around recovery is just as important as the training itself, and compression garments are key in removing delayed onset muscle soreness to keep you fresh, not only for the next session, but game day as well 👌🏼

Book your Compression Therapy Session with us through the link in our bio, and you’ll feel how much better you feel after! 🦵🏼

A common question we get asked here at TLC is whether you should cold plunge before or after a workout? Here’s what the science has to say about timing your exposure to cold water!

All types of physical activity share one common trait — hard workouts require equally vigorous periods of recovery. How you spend the hours between your training sessions plays a tremendous role in not just your long-term progress in the gym, but how you’ll physically feel along the way. Whether you’re a die-hard strength athlete pursuing your next one-rep max or you exercise just to stay healthy and happy, a cold plunge (and the contrast therapy protocol we recommend here at TLC) can benefit you.

Luckily, when it comes to cold plunging, the science is crystal clear: Tactical cold water immersion comes with a host of recovery and performance-based benefits! And while there can be some differences for professional athletes in terms of timing, if you’re plunging for general health benefits, it doesn’t really matter when you take a dip. But here are the known benefits of plunging before or after a workout 👇

❄️ Benefits of Cold Plunging Before a Workout: Since most people utilise cold plunges for their physiological effects, you generally won’t see too many potent bodily changes by taking a dip prior to your workout. However, that doesn’t mean that a pre-workout plunge is altogether useless.
👉 A cold plunge and/or contrast therapy is a good way to wake yourself up if you’re feeling sluggish or groggy prior to your workout.
👉 Plunging prior to a workout can afford you the benefits of increased mental clarity and stress reduction.

❄️ Benefits of Cold Plunging After a Workout: Most of the scientific studies on cold water immersion involve subjects taking dips after their training session. As such, the findings generally support cold plunging as a viable means of enhancing muscular recovery.
👉 Some researchers have found that, for mixed martial arts athletes who also perform sprints and interval training, cold plunging both improved recovery time and enhanced feelings of general wellness.
👉 There are also data supporting cold plunges as a way of reducing post-workout delayed-onset muscle soreness.
👉 A study on “winter swimmers” marked a period of elevated thermogenesis (fat burning) after bouts of swimming in cold temperatures.

At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter when you take a dip, so we recommend you plunge whenever it suits your schedule and at whatever time feels sustainable for you.

5 WAYS MASSAGE REDUCES PAIN 💆🏻‍♂️

A massage is more than a enjoyment- it can effectively reduce pain in a range of ways! This includes:

1. Natural Painkiller: when you receive a massage, your body releases endorphins, which are your own natural painkillers. These chemicals help you feel good and reduce pain.

2. Better Blood Flow: massage boosts circulation, which means more oxygen and nutrients get to your muscles and tissue. This helps reduce inflammation and muscle soreness, making you feel better.

3. Muscle Relaxation: massaging the muscles helps them relax and release tension. This can ease the pain caused by tight or knotted muscles, and improve how your muscles function overall.

4. Pain Interruption: think of your nervous system like a busy switchboard. Massage send pleasant signals that can override the pain signals, effectively blocking them from reaching your brain.

5. Stress Relief: massage lowers cortisol levels, which is the hormone your body produces when you’re stressed. High cortisol can make pain worse by increasing inflammation and muscle tension. Buy reducing stress, massage helps reduce pain.

Sauna for Weight Loss: Does It Work? 🔥

Research shows that saunas can boost your metabolic rate and support fat loss by promoting the browning of adipose tissue. While they aren’t a standalone solution for weight loss, saunas are a powerful addition to a holistic wellness routine. Here’s how to maximise the benefits:

👉🏼 Post-Workout Recovery: Use the sauna after exercising to enhance muscle recovery and reduce soreness, keeping you consistent with your fitness routine.

👉🏼 Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water before and after your sauna session to replace lost fluids and keep your body functioning optimally.

👉🏼Optimise Your Sauna Time and Temperature: Start with a session once a week for 30 minutes and gradually increase to 30 minute or 45 minute sessions, 3 times a week. At TLC, we customise sauna sessions to each person and their individual preferences and level of experience with heat therapy. We can set the temperature anywhere from 50 - 75ºC, although we generally recommend 65ºC if you can handle it. If you feel dizzy or lightheaded, exit the sauna to avoid dehydration.

👉🏼 Pair with a Healthy Diet: Combine sauna sessions with a balanced diet rich in whole foods for real fat loss and better overall health.

👉🏼 Regular Use: Enjoy the ongoing benefits of regular sauna use, including improved cardiovascular function, stress reduction, and better sleep.

Remember, it’s the rise in your core body temperature during your sauna session that delivers the benefits. No matter the regularity, duration and preferred temperature of your sauna, you’re still gaining health rewards!

"In the world of wellness, we often talk about balance, and cold exposure provides a unique way to achieve this. Cold water immersion has been shown to activate not only the sympathetic nervous system but also the parasympathetic nervous system. The latter, also known as the 'rest and digest' system, helps to promote mental balance and overall well-being. This dual action makes cold therapy a powerful tool in our wellness toolkit" ~ Dr. Susanna Soberg

Dopamine is a powerful molecule capable of elevating mood, enhancing focus, boosting attention and assisting goal-directed behaviour. In short it makes you feel happier with more focus and productivity, and for longer!

According to Neuroscientist Andrew Huberman, who is at the forefront of modern science in the health and wellness realm, "even short bouts of cold exposure can cause a lasting increase in dopamine and sustained elevation of mood, energy, and focus."

So what are you waiting for?! Are you ready for a round in the cold pool?
