A few facts about lucerne πΏπ From the one and only Karly at Stable-Ised Equine. Head on over and give her a follow for more nutrition information! There can be alot of confusion around nutrition with advice coming from left right and centre- Karly seperates the fact from fiction in super informative posts!
Don't forget if your wanting to jump on board with Karlys products- we have the full Practi range available instore π

π΄ Today, letβs debunk some common misconceptions about lucerne/alfalfa, or ππ¦π₯πͺπ€π’π¨π° ππ’π΅πͺπ·π’ if youβd like to get fancy.
π± Myth #1: Lucerne is high in sugar and soaking it helps to remove some of the sugar content.
π΄ Truth #1: Lucerne is high in protein, but not high in sugar. While it is true that soaking hay helps to remove some of the sugar content, soaking lucerne is pointless as there are no high sugar concentrations to begin with. Soaking does not remove protein or calories.
π± Myth #2: Lucerne will make horses hot.
π΄ Truth #2: As mentioned already, lucerne is a fantastic source of protein which converts to energy when consumed by the horse. Lucerne itself is a source of slower-release energy in comparison to cereal grains and grain by-products because it is low in sugar and starch but high in digestible fibre. Itβs often not the lucerne itself causing βhotβ behaviour, but an excess of energy input relevant to the horseβs energy output. Feeding a diet that is balanced and provides energy sources that are appropriate for the individualβs activity level will usually mitigate behavioural βissues.β
π± Myth #3: Lucerne is comparable to other hay types for ulcer prevention and gastrointestinal health.
π΄ Truth #3: Any low sugar and starch hay is going to aid in the prevention of ulcers and support gastrointestinal health, however lucerne comes with the advantage of being high in bioavailable calcium. Not only is this source of highly bioavailable calcium beneficial for horses with higher calcium requirements such as breeding and growing horses, or horses grazing on high oxalate pastures, it is also fantastic at neutralising and buffering gastric due to itβs alkaline profile.
π± Myth #4: Lucerne is suitable for laminitic/metabolic horses.
π΄ Truth #4: While lucerne does tick the box of being low in sugar and starch, itβs quality protein content can be a trigger for some laminitic and metabolic equines and it is therefore a βmaybeβ feed for this category of horse. Horses who are actively laminitic should not be fed lucerne (or any high protein feed), as it is not a situation where you want to be conducting tests with βpotentiallyβ suitable food sources.
π± Myth #5: Lucerne will make a horse produce poorly formed or watery manure.
π΄ Truth #5: Horses can be intolerant or allergic to any food source, but lucerne being the cause of scouring or diarrhoea is usually because it has been introduced to the diet too quickly, or because it is high in digestible fibre and the horse isnβt intaking adequate indigestible fibre elsewhere in the diet. Feeding lower quality and slightly stalky lucerne hay can help to overcome this issue.
π± So tell me, do you love or hate lucerne? Do you feed it daily or only on occasion? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below and as always, please feel welcome to share this article if you enjoyed it. π

π΄ Following my recent post about the cost breakdown and nutritional benefits of PractiBALANCE, I received several requests to do the same for itβs sister supplement, PractiCAL, which I have worked incredibly hard to develop with the goal of making feeding horses who are grazing on high oxalate, tropical, and subtropical grasses that little bit easier. So here we go!
ποΈ A 500kg horse in light work is recommend to receive only 250g of PractiCAL per day. That means a 25kg bag would last 100 days, or just over 3 months. Thatβs over a quarter of a year out of a single 25kg bag.
π Out of that 250g daily serving, a horse would receive the following key vitamins and minerals:
β«οΈ Calcium: 36g
βͺοΈ Copper: 250mg
β«οΈ Zinc: 828mg
βͺοΈ Vitamin E: 625 IU
*PractiCAL also includes other nutrients such as Lysine, Methionine, Threonine, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Sodium, Selenium, Iodine, Manganese, Vitamin A, and an extensive list of B Vitamins.
π¦ Out of that same 250g serving, a horse will also receive 8g (10g if feeding 300g/day for a slightly elevated workload) of one of the most extensively researched and scientifically-supported toxin binders; Mycosorb A+. Not just 1-2g per serving to make it sound effective on paper, but a true base serving as outlined by Alltech.
π«΄πΌ PractiCAL is pelleted, making it incredibly easy to feed from the hand as a βtreatβ to easy-keeping horses who donβt require additional hard feeding. Being pelleted also means that there are no powders being sifted out.
π½ PractiCAL is truly free of cereal grains and grain by-products, and is tested at only 2.49% combined sugar and starch (NSC).
π So with all of this in mind, at $155.00 per 25kg, this high-oxalate-supporting-super-supplement only costs $1.55/day to feed to a 500kg horse and even if you live super remote and canβt escape the highest shipping rate of around $60.00, it would still only cost $2.15/day to feed. I think you would be hard-pressed to find a comparable product (enough calcium to offset high oxalate grasses, vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, amino acids, and a toxin binder) for a similar price point.
