Pearls - preventing preeclampsia PEARLS was established by a small group of interested patients and doctors in 2002.
At that time it was not known what causes preeclampsia. This condition has been baffling scientists and doctors for over 100 years. Our critical aim at that time was to find that cause. Since our modest beginnings in 2002 the scientists supported by PEARLS , Professor Annemarie Hennessy and her team , have been extremely successful. There have been some world leading breakthoughs in their research and Professor Hennessy and her team are regarded as leaders in the world in preeclampsia research.

World Preeclampsia Day - May 22 2022. Finally we have an annual day recognising preeclampsia as one of the most serious health issue facing women and their families in the world today. World Preeclampsia Day is a day where we can get together to talk about preeclampsia, learn more about what is being done to prevent and safely treat preeclampsia and how you can assist. Fantastic night on Saturday night raising money for preeclampsia research. Thank you to everyone who attended. A special thank you to Alex Perry for being our MC, to Anthea Leonard for styling and cupcakes, and Emma Brown Garrett, our auctioneer, who sold over $80,000 under the hammer on the night. Our Story
PEARLS was established by a small group of interested patients and doctors including Amanda Davidson and Professor Annemarie Hennessy in 2002. At that time it was not known what causes preeclampsia - a devastating condition that affects approximately 1 in 10 pregnancies. This condition had been baffling scientists and doctors for over 100 years and remains the biggest killer of mothers and their babies in the world today. Over the past 17 years there have been some critical breakthroughs in the research effort, including finding the fundamental cause of preeclampsia. Having identified the cause of preeclampsia the PEARLS scientific team are regarded as world leaders in preeclampsia research and have collaborations in place internationally to work to establish how preeclampsia can be prevented. Our work continues.
