This week marked the International Translation Day (30 September), on the day of the feast of St. Jerome. St Jerome was the Bible translator and considered the patron saint of translators.
Translators gives us access to books originally written in other languages that we would otherwise not be able to read. So happy to be able to offer translated books at .au of some of my favourite stories:
1. ‘Le petit prince’/ ‘Zistwar ti-prens’ by Antoine De Saint-Exupéry, translated from French to Mauritian Creole by Dev Virahsawmy
2. ‘Le ciel par-dessus le toit’/ ‘The Sky above the roof’ by Natacha Appanah, translated from French to English by Geoffrey Strachan
3. ‘Rêve d’oiseau’ / ‘A dream of birds’ by Shenaz Patel, translated from French to English by Edwige-Renée Dro
4. ‘Sens magique’ / ‘Magical sens’ by Malcolm De Chazal, translated from French to English by Jean Bonnin
5. ‘コーヒーが冷めないうちに‘/ ‘Tant que le café est encore chaud’, by Toshikazu Kawaguchi, translated from Japanese to French by Miyako Slocombe
6. ‘Ève de ses décombres’ / ‘Eve out of her ruins’ by Ananda Devi, translated from French to English by Jeffrey Zuckerman.
Long train trip today and listening to ‘Rivage de la colère’ (2020) audiobook and digital comic of the novel by Caroline Laurent .laurent.livres
What a great read so far!
It’s the story of the people of Diego Garcia, a dependant island of Mauritius. After the independence of Mauritius from the British in 1968, Diego Garcia is leased to the American as a military base for the next 50 years. Everyone needs to leave the island… Feels like this is place for the bookmark!
What a complex story to tell.
‘If you gather together all the shades of blue in the world and pick the bluest, the epitome of blue, this was the colour you would choose’ …
Haruki Murakami, South of the Border, West of the Sun (1992)
Too many blues to choose from 💙

Some books never get old. This weekend enjoyed re-reading this classic: Alice’s adventures in Wonderland. Over the years, I collected a number of Lewis Carroll’s books. Always wondered how the Mauritian’s Dodo made it to this story… blog post coming soon 🦤
‘It was high time to go, for the pool was getting quite crowded with the birds and animals that had fallen into it: there were a Duck and a Dodo, a Lory and an Eaglet, and several other curious creatures.’
‘Il était grand temps de partir, la mare se trouvant à présent fort encombrée par les oiseaux et les animaux qui y étaient tombés : il y avait un Canard, un Dodo, un Lori, un Aiglon, et plusieurs autres créatures bizarres.’
Super excited to introduce Japanese literature to .au collections 🤩
‘Before the coffee gets cold’ / ‘Tant que le café est encore chaud’ by Toshikazu Kawaguchi is a novel that takes place in a small coffee shop in a Tokyo. Each chapter reveals complex human relationships and the opportunity to travel back in time to repair and heal… coffee

Finally finished ‘Le Cantique du Rasta’ by Sharon Paul 🇲🇺
The story is inspired by the life and death of famous Mauritian musician, Kaya, who tragically passed away in police custody on the 21st of July 1999. Sharon Paul takes me back in time and squeezes out memories, so comforting.
A copy is available on .au bookshelf. DM for more info.

‘Zistwar ti-prens’ / ‘The little prince’ by Antoine De Saint-Exupéry .
Translation in Mauritian Creole, by Dev Virahsawmy.
🇲🇺 Aster sey mazinn sok ki mo ti gagne kan b***r gramaten, enn lavwa bien drol kas mo somey. Lavwa la ti dir: “Tonton, desinn enn mouton pou mwa!”
🇦🇺 Because of that you can imagine my surprise when I heard a funny little voice. It said: “Please, draw me a sheep!”
🇫🇷 Alors vous imaginez ma surprise, au lever du jour, quand une drôle de petite voix m’a réveillé. Elle disait: “S’il vous plaît... dessine-moi un mouton!”

Second hand book shopping in Kyoto and finding one of my favourite story: Le petit prince/The little prince /星の王子さま by Antoine De Saint Exupéry, Japanese edition translated by Kyoji Nishi.
Extract from Chapter 5:
🇫🇷 Chaque jour j’apprenais quelque chose sur la planète, sur le départ, sur le voyage.
🇦🇺 Little by little, day after day, I learned more and more about the little prince’s planet, his departure, his journey.
🇯🇵 毎日話をするうちに、僕は王子さまの星のことや、王子さまがその星を出てきたこ と、王子さまが旅をしていたことなどを知るようになっていった。
