Townsville Baseball – where you come for the sport and stay for the people | Baseball.com.au 13/09/2024

"As the sole baseball fields in town, it doesn’t matter who you play for or what skill level you are at – Jabiru is home to us all.

We may come from all walks of life – military, mining, marine biology, motherhood and more – but when we step onto the diamond, we are all ball players.

From four to 84, juniors, rookies and seasoned players alike, the beauty in the ballpark is that everyone is willing to give it a go and try their best. And that is all anyone can ask or give."

Beautiful story by Connie Rowe.

The magic of Townsville Baseball ⚾️ ✨ 🇦🇺 ⬇️

This story from Connie Rowe has us in the feels 🥹

“On the doorstep to the Great Barrier Reef, nestled in tropical north Queensland, there is a small community baseball field.

On face value, it appears just like any other – a place to run the dogs, play with the kids or simply go for a stroll.

But Jabiru Park in Townsville is far from ordinary. In fact, it is the simplicity and rawness of what this park represents and the people it unites that makes it so extraordinary.

As most of the country prepares for the upcoming baseball season, the Townsville season is coming to a close.

As the anticipation of the upcoming Grand Final looms for what is sure to be an epic match up full of thrills, spills and firsts for the league, everywhere I look I am reminded of what drew me to this community and more importantly, why I have stayed.

Home to the Baseball Association of Townsville, or affectionately known as ‘BAT’ to the locals, Jabiru Park unites our community.

As the sole baseball fields in town, it doesn’t matter who you play for or what skill level you are at – Jabiru is home to us all.

We may come from all walks of life – military, mining, marine biology, motherhood and more – but when we step onto the diamond, we are all ball players.

From four to 84, juniors, rookies and seasoned players alike, the beauty in the ballpark is that everyone is willing to give it a go and try their best. And that is all anyone can ask or give.

For many like myself, Townsville is not our first home – nor may it be our last.

Moving to a new town can often be daunting, without a support network or an outlet to connect with. That was until, each of us discovered the Baseball Association Townsville. With open arms, the community welcomes each of us into the fold and into the family.”

Oh, the Magic of Townsville Baseball.

This game 🤯 🔥

Australia held off Great Britain in a 13-12 epic in sweltering 37 degree heat at the U23 World Cup.

But as much as Australia scored, they just couldn’t quite shake away a remarkably persistent Great Britain.

The mid-portion of the game went a little like this:

End 2: 5-0 Australia.
Mid 3: 5-4 Australia.
End 3: 10-4 Australia.
Mid 4: 10-8 Australia.
End 4: 13-8 Australia.
Mid 5: 13-12 Australia.

“That game was a grind. Credit to Great Britain for bouncing back after each inning. However, our boys were outstanding on passing the bat to the next guy. We stayed calm and trusted what we needed to do and executed offensively extremely well,” says Australia’s Chris Burke, who drove in five runs.

“One of the grittiest games I’ve ever played.”

Great Britain had two runners on and no outs in the last. But Jo Stevens initiated a remarkable double play before Josh Beezley closed the door.

Australia is 3-1 with one group stage game to play.

A win over China tomorrow will advance Australia to the Super Round.

Ten Australian baseball players have been invited to play on ‘World Select Team’ at the upcoming Major League Baseball College Showcase Tour in Arizona.

The annual event welcomes amateur baseball players, all under age 20, from Europe, Asia, South America, North America and Australia, to Arizona.

The showcase is an initiative that MLB has employed to grow the game internationally. This year’s edition runs from September 23 – October 3.

Players participate in an 11-day experience that includes visits to local Arizona colleges and universities, games against teams at various levels and a pro-style workout day for college recruiters and professional scouts. Australia’s schedule is below.

From Japan, with love 💚

Ky Jackson has a unique path to the Under 23 World Cup team. While others are playing pro ball or at college, he’s been pitching in the Industrial League in Japan.

He and his teammates play for major company team Nippon Express against all the major corporations in Japan like Toyota, Mitsubishi, Honda and Subaru.

They play in big tournaments in Japan’s biggest stadiums like Jingu Stadium, Kyocera Dome and the Tokyo Dome.

Once they have spent two years in the system there is an opportunity to be drafted into the NPB (pro). Ky is eligible next year.

“The lessons I learned in Japan and the previous Under 23 World Cup is about communication with the catcher and trusting, having confidence with my stuff. [It’s about] attacking the strike zone with all pitches as the opponent has likely never faced me,” he says.

Jackson graduated from university in Japan and has been pitching in the Industrial League since February which he says is a big step up in level.

He returns to the Under 23 cup side after pitching in the same event in 2022.

“Playing in big tournaments over here has been great for what to expect at the World Cup,” he says.

This is Elodie O’Sullivan. She’s an Australian who just finished playing in the top women’s competition in Japan with Tokai Nexus 🇯🇵

What an inspiration 🙌

She’s played for her country in a World Cup, won national championships and starred in showcases.

Kristin Sims wrote a wonderful profile on Elodie and her experience in Japan and we think you should read it via link in bio.

Elodie wonderfully outlines how she overcame a serious injury & missing out on selection for the last World Cup and turned it into an incredible opportunity ⚾️

Are you a storyteller? Are you passionate about baseball and want to help grow the game in Australia and around the world? Then we’re looking at you!

Australian baseball is a wonderful community filled with people from all different walks of life and skillsets. But we are united by two things: a love of baseball, and the passion to see this sport grow.

That’s why we are sending a call out to the baseball gods, trying to find out who in our community may want to assist us with our communications, marketing and story-telling efforts.

This could be story writing, photography, marketing campaigns, game coverage or telling a tale from your local club. Maybe you have an idea to help launch us to a new stratosphere.

Baseball Australia and the ABL are looking to fill some voluntary positions to help progress the game in Australia and contribute to developing our sport on the international diamond.

We’re looking for individuals who are passionate about Baseball, but are also looking to gain experience in broadcast, digital, media and grow our social media presence. Maybe there is a little bit of time, and a passion project, that you’d like to explore within baseball to help grow our game.

We have a list of little projects that may be perfect for a passionate individual. This could be in the Australian Baseball League, at club level, or at events.

Do you have an idea of your own on how we could tell the baseball story to our existing (and new!) audience? We’d love to hear that too.

We've had over 30 applicants so far and we need to hear from you by Sunday!

If the above sounds like you, introduce yourself (and send your CV) to [email protected]. Let us know what you’re thinking!

Applications close 1 September 2024.

We asked some Little Leaguers about why they play baseball and thought we’d share this great response from Victoria’s Mia Wang, age 10.

“My favorite thing about baseball is being part of a team and making great plays together. I love the excitement of catching a difficult fly ball, making strikeouts, and sliding on bases.

Yes, I love them all. What keeps me coming back is the fun I have with my friends and the feeling of improving my skills with each practice and game. PS.. I know I am tiny, but I am still trying to hit a home run.”
