Subitising is the ability to automatically recognise the number of objects without having to count them. E.g. dots on a dice. Being able to subitise allows our learners to build on number facts and other skills without having to count by one. E.g. automatically seeing 5 on a ten frame means we count on from 5: 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, (5 more to make 10), without having to count back from 1. #Target_Tutoring_Sydney #AchievingAcademicSuccess #mathematics #subitising #numberbonds #numberfacts #countingon #additionandsubtraction

Never too early to start our 3 year old!

Never too young to start our 3 year old!

Word work with our little learner.

How good is her mental strategy? Nope, it wasn't us. We are not taking credit for what our students already know. We work with what they already have and build on it. Since 'M' already has solid mental strategies in place for addition and subtraction, we are teaching her patterns in odd and even numbers to check her work. E.g. even number + even number = even number. By recognising these patterns with odd and even numbers, 'M' was able to check for accuracy and attend to mistakes.

An activity to learn about place value. Use playing cards to make a four-digit number. Write down as many ways you can think of to represent the number.

Getting students to talk about the maths helps to develop mathematical thinking and communication as well as a deeper level of understanding.

'M' is learning to count more effectively, firstly by bundling groups of 10s and skip counting by 10s then 1s.

A Numeracy activity for our little learners to practise identifying numbers before and after.

Helping Little Writers to Compose Sentences
To help students who are struggling to compose sentences, provide them with the words to put together like a jigsaw puzzle. It doesn't have to be neatly laminated like in this video. Scrap paper will do! To make this activity fun, have students compose silly sentences.

Tutoring Homework is Better than School Homework!
'A' explains why he likes tutoring homework.

Counting on to Subtract
Counting on is a mental strategy for addition and subtraction. The aim is count on from a larger number to add or subtract. E.g. 15 - 11 We start at 11 and 'count on' until we get to 15. This would mean counting on 4 numbers so the answer is 4. 15 - 11 = 4 Watch 'A' as she demonstrates how to use a number line to count on when subtracting. As she has just learnt the skill, we are encouraging her to focus on counting on to subtract all numbers. The next step is to teach 'A' how to subtract more efficiently. In this video, counting on to find the answer for 20 - 6 is not the most efficient way!

Reflecting on the CUBES Strategy
'J' reflects on how the CUBES strategy helps him to solve word problems in Mathematics.
