Our little 4yo demonstrates emergent writing skills, using symbols, drawings, and markings to convey a message on her calendar. She has created a timetable of her planned activities during the two weeks school holiday and refers to it each day to tell her family what she will be doing.

Do you know the difference?

Both are three-dimensional shapes. Prisms have flat surfaces and two ends that are the same. Pyramids also have flat faces but are joined together at a pointy end called an apex.

Bundling is a method of counting by grouping small units to make a bigger one. For example, counting by tens and then ones will be a lot quicker and easier than counting by ones, especially when working with larger numbers.

In our 30-minute school readiness program, our pre-kindies are learning phonics and numeracy skills.

Our little learner has achieved the first two sets of letter identification (S, A, T, P, I, N, M and D). She is learning to count to 20 and identifying numbers up to 10.

Persuasive writing is a non-fiction text convincing the reader of the writer's point of view. It presents an idea from the writer's perspective with:
- arguments to support the opinion.
- a rebuttal with opposing reasons (for older children.
- a convincing conclusion.

Why does vocabulary matter?

Vocabulary is essential in helping students with:
🗣 spoken language - being able to clearly articulate a message through word choice
📖 decoding skills - having prior knowledge of words will help to sound out and quickly read words
📘 comprehension - having a broad vocabulary is the foundation to understanding what is read

Getting our kindy learner to apply higher order thinking skills.

Building on from our previous activity and moving away from counters to bridge to 20. This helps our little learner to move beyond manipulatives and begin visualising the bridge to 20.

Bridging is a mental additive strategy that involves adding to the nearest 10, then counting on. Students in year 1 and 2 can be taught to bridge to 10 first to add 2 single digit numbers. E.g. 8 + 6 = 10 + 4 = 14

A good night's sleep will help to improve concentration, memory, decision making and cognitive speed. Make sure you relax and go to bed early the night before NAPLAN.

Get used to completing NAPLAN style questions and working online. Practise using a mouse and typing skills, which is essential for NAPLAN, including the online writing assessment.

An array represents multiplication as columns and rows to help answer multiplication questions. They help children to understand how multiplication facts are derived and are imperative before rote learning times tables.

Practise writing as often as possible. Give yourself 3 minutes to brainstorm ideas on a range of topics that you can readily re-use and adapt for the NAPLAN writing test.

Having a broad vocabulary will help with NAPLAN and overall literacy. Play games such as Scrabble, Taboo, and crosswords to learn new words. Don't forget to read, read, read!

Student engagement is not always easy to achieve. We find ways to change things up and make it more interesting and meaningful.

Reading is the gateway to language. Through reading, children will receive first hand experience of how the English language works. Reading exposes children to new vocabulary, and develops ideas and creativity.

Don't spend too long on one question. If it is too tricky, use the elimination method (see tip #2), pick the best answer and move on. Focusing on one question for too long could cost you valuable time that could be used answering other questions.

Back in full swing!

When answering multiple choice questions, there are usually two obviously incorrect answers, one 'tricky' answer and one correct answer. Rule out the obviously wrong answers and concentrate on the remaining two until you have found the right one.

Start learning to keep track of time and practising completing tasks within a set timeframe. During the test, keep an eye on the clock so that you know how much time you have left in each section.
