It’s a long post, but the underlying issue remains about the future of our country, it isn’t what it used to be, that’s for sure

This may be my last post given Facebook gave me a three-week detention last time I wrote about this.

So PLEASE, if you haven't taken the time to read my posts in the past, I implore you to read this one. I am not asking for responses, just pay me the courtesy of looking at the photo, don't worry about what is in it, just take note of what is NOT in it.

This photo is of Sydney Markets, a carpark...... my carpark. I say that because I have paid for this truck spot in some shape or form for about the last seven years, through both my business tenures. I took the photo yesterday morning. This photo does more than any words can do, which is often the case with photos. The damning part of this situation, and which is eating me away to the core, is the emptiness. The emptiness is that this is a Truck Carpark. It should be full of trucks. Like me, but businesses exponentially larger than mine, pay to park their truck here to collect their produce for their shops. Two years ago, it was daily s**t fight because cars and vans and even other trucks would try and squeeze into spots that just didn't exist. We often reminisce of the many times we used a forklift to remove an unwanted car or truck that parked illegally that infringed our operations. The sad part of this is that my truck is the only one there! Guys who I have never seen have a day off are just not coming. Business has hit so hard that while many shops have been forced to close, it has now got to the point of the most resilient businesses are truly hurting.

This government bulls**t surrounding Coles and Woolworths is WAAAAAAY too late, because even if those two are regulated heavily and it eventually benefits the farmers, there won't be any farmers to rejoice because there won't be any shops left to take their produce, it will all just go to the big two.

Aaaaand the thing that angers me beyond belief is Sydney Markets Limited who has to be more incompetent than the Bureau of Meteorology. You will often hear me quip that with all the billions of dollars the government throws at the BOM for technology, they constantly get it wrong, when we, anybody, can just walk outside and tell you it is raining or not, which is often the contrary to what the BOM is saying at the time. SML is no different, when they take $66 million dollars in rent and can only turn that into $1 million dollar profit pretty well says it all! At any time they could walk outside and see what is no longer there. But have they? What do they do about it? Just put in place charges to gouge those already struggling, because they're the only ones at the markets to hit up. Why hasn't SML lobbied government long before this to get help for all these fruit and veg shops that were forced to close? FFS last week we see one of Australia's richest men get propped up to the tune of $50 million dollars for the next 12 months. That being Lyndsay Fox and his business Armaguard. How far would $50 million have gone to stopping fruit and veg shops closing? SML has played into the hands of the two big supermarkets because they have sat by and allowed it all to happen. Their myopic logic that they will continue to get rent because wholesalers will still have to serve the supermarkets is beyond comprehension at its narrow mindedness.

I have written many times about my own struggles with my business this time round, and they are real. I have always been successful in what I have done, but I always felt working hard, integrity, honesty, transparency, constantly evolving and staying in touch were successful traits, but this will go down as my first real failure. I never expected help and in fact I help and support many other businesses, but in this economy there just is not the same mindset to give and receive, it's about just trying to survive.

For god sake at the next election think hard about where we are going and how you can make a difference by being smart about your voting. Look past the here and now and look ahead. If we don't do something drastically about water in this country the mound of dirt we currently stand on will continue to erode and Australia itself will become a group of little islands in itself.

I get my toilet paper, cleaning products, garbage bags etc delivered as well, not so much for convenience but for the fact it keeps me out of the shops and stops any impulse purchases. But I refuse to purchase online what I can source locally. But I constantly get responses to my emails checking on customers who haven't ordered in a while that they are just getting their fruit and veg or meat with their online order as it is easy to just get the one delivery. And there lies the problem and one I have not been able to redirect through educated posts.

End of my rant, I will get back to packing the THIRTEEN boxes I have to deliver today, that don't even pay the fuel to have gone to and from the Markets this morning let alone pay anything else. Those who have gotten to know me personally know first-hand I have literally given my all to you, my customers, with blood, sweat, tears, financially, physically and psychologically. I have nothing left to give to be honest, to write this post pains me more than you will ever know. My dad beat crying out of me when I was 6, and now I have beaten myself up countless times trying to find reasons people don't/stop ordering. I thought writing this was going to make me cry but then realised it was just an errant eye lash. Let me tell you, working 20,21,22, 23 hour days takes its toll on your relationships no matter how connected you are. Romina has put up with far more than she ever signed on for and I will always be grateful that she has stood by me, I certainly don't deserve it. I don't make excuses, I find solutions, but sadly my solutions database has run dry.
