A great & highly respected voluntary contributor to Oakville & The Hawkesbury.

Peter Vaughan Speet
21.10.1941 ~ 12.09.2021
Aged 79 years
Late of Oakville

Loved by all that knew him…

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share with you that during the night of Sunday the 12th September, 2021. We lost an ultimate hero who fought the biggest fight to the very end.

Our hearts are broken but we are so proud of all that Pete has achieved over the years. His dedication to Oakville Rural Fire Brigade was exemplary but his dedication and love for our family far exceeded anything else! His competitiveness and determination defined him. He made us believe that we could do anything we put our minds to no matter what life threw at us.

Pete was a loving husband to our mum Roslyn. The best dadda to Sally, Bethany (Dec), Katrina, Nerida (Dec), Melanie and Heidi. A treasured father-in-law to David, Andrew, Michael and Steven. and by far the proudest grandfather to Zachary, William, Kyralee, Tayah, Keely, Codey, Molly and Matylda.

He was our Pete...

Due to the current public health order and with all the restrictions on funeral services. Peter’s family have requested for his Funeral Service to be live streamed at the above date and time. As it is 10x immediate family only to be in attendance.

Peter's service will be held on Saturday 18th September, 2021 at 2:00pm, Live Streaming will begin at 1:15pm, as we are allowing time for the cortege to arrive. Please follow the link below to take you directly to Peter’s tribute page to watch the livestreaming of his funeral service.

Today's Google Doodle is to mark (celebrate) the 122nd birthday of Sir Ludwig "Poppa" Guttmann CBE FRS (3 July 1899 – 18 March 1980) who was a German-British neurologist. He was a pioneer of spinal cord injury management and was able to have people with spinal cord injuries survive for more than mere weeks & months ! he used sport as a means of rehabilitation, then established the Stoke Mandeville Games, the fore running inspiration for the Paralympic games. Ken our manager would not be alive today without Professor Guttmann's work.

We all can take a page out of this young ladies book

Twice this week, I have watched an elderly individual, fade into the busy life in which we all live. One man just needed Panadol for his wife but the shop assistant simply said it’s in ‘6’. But he struggled to navigate the supermarket and as I watched him go in the wrong direction, I left all my groceries and took him where he needed to go. Today, I watched an elderly man struggle in the heat, who had obviously had a fall with a huge scrape and blood on his leg. He walked past people in the cafe, while he slowly made his way to his car. Not one person stopped. Or looked. Or acknowledged him. I took him to his car and checked he was ok. He told me he had a fall and wasn’t sure how the air con worked in his car so he just didn’t use it. I sat with him, until his air con kicked in and heard him talk about the old frail body that he is in, that fails him now, every single day.

When you see an elderly person walking down the street, searching in the supermarket or struggling to their car, take a minute out of your busy schedule and ask them if they need a hand. Think about your grand parents and your parents and how pi**ed you would be if someone didn’t stop to help them. But more, think of them as you.

Once upon a time they were you. They were busy, they had work, they had children, they were able.... Today, they are just in an older body that is not going as fast as it used to and this busy life is fu***ng confusing. They deserve our utmost respect and consideration. One day it will be you, it will be us. I wish more people gave a s**t about them and acknowledged them for their admirable existence and geez I hope someday, not that far away, someone does it for me.

We do live in Gods Country 😉

WOW is pretty much the only way to sum up a once in a lifetime sight like this ✨

IG/craig_richards_photography had planned on photographing the iconic Visit 12 Apostles at sunset when he was treated to this unexpected and spectacular bioluminescence display instead! Although you may not witness sparkling bright blue waves exactly like this along the rugged Visit the Great Ocean Road (we’re just a tad jealous, Craig 😉), we can confirm that this famous coastal road trip in Victoria delivers simply magical scenery on any given day.

'He didn't say anything about you being in a wheelchair': How to change this happening in the workplace Andrew Meddings is a respected swimming pool designer whose work takes him all across Australia. His wheelchair comes as a shock to some clients, but an organisation employing people with lived experiences of disability is working to change any negative perceptions.

🌺 Today we remember Kerry Whelan 🌺

39 year old Kerry Whelan was last seen on Tuesday 6th May 1997, when she vanished from the Parramatta Park Royal Hotel, NSW.

On this day, Kerry had driven to the Park Royal Hotel in Parramatta, telling her husband she had a 9am beautician's appointment.

Closed circuit television cameras captured her walking up the ramp of the underground car park and disappearing from view. This was the last time Kerry was seen. She has not made contact with family or friends since this date.

On the 7th May 1997, Mr Whelan received a ransom note for $1 million at his Kurrajong property.

Bruce Burrell, a family friend and one-time employee of the businessman, although charged with Mrs Whelan's murder, never admitted to what he did with Kerry's body. Sadly, Bruce Burrell died in custody in August 2016, taking his secrets to the grave.

Sadly, Kerry's husband passed away in November 2016, not knowing what happened to his wife, but her family have never given up hope of finding her remains so they can bury her with the love and dignity she deserves.

If you have any information which can assist police in locating Kerry's remains, please call Crimestoppers 1800 333 000 and put an end to this family's suffering.

When the Corona Virus finally exhausts itself and the danger is over, let's do something good for our country,
Let's spend our holidays in Australia, eat in local restaurants, buy Australian products, buy local meats and veggies and support local businesses and support our Farmers.
These businesses are going to find it very difficult to get back on their feet and survive without our help. They're suffering badly now.
Our products are some of the best in the world. Our country is one of the most beautiful. Let’s look after it and its loyal people, not because of Bushfires, not because of floods, not because of viruses, but because we are Australian & we look after each other.

West Australian senator Jordan Steele-John has called for a comprehensive government plan for people with disabilities

WA senator Jordan Steele-John.
"People are very worried about what we are seeing in countries like Italy where disabled people are basically being asked to go to the back of the line and that vulnerable people across the community are not receiving the support and information that we need. And that is something that we cannot let happen here in Australia. And if we act urgently now, if the Government takes an integrated, coordinated response, then we can make sure that vulnerable people, people who are at risk, are supported through this crisis and that is what the Greens are calling for.
"What we need to be doing is using the various datasets that exist across the country in relation to what the support needs of disabled people are, where we live, where the workforce concentrations are, and combining that together with information about the healthcare system to ensure that disability service providers are supported, that NDIS participants are supported, to maintain those critical functions.

"Because the reality is that for many vulnerable communities, including disabled people, we need support day-by-day to continue to live.
"Folks need to help us do our shopping or to help us move around in the night so that we don't get bedsores. There is kind of a disconnect here. We cannot completely socially distance because we need to interact with people to be able to just get by, day by day.
That's why we need a comprehensive, coordinated plan to support that workforce to continue, to support disabled people to continue to access what we need as the crisis develops."
