🌟 Your pregnancy journey starts when an egg is fertilized by s***m.
While your due date is calculated from the first day of your last period, conception happens afterward.
🤰 In the next 4-5 days, the fertilized egg divides and moves to the uterus.
🧬 The embryo has three layers:
Outer layer:
Develops into the nervous system and brain.
Middle layer:
Becomes the heart, blood vessels, muscles, and bones.
Inner layer:
Forms the breathing and digestive systems.
🚨 You might not notice signs of pregnancy just yet. Many women discover they're pregnant by missing their period at the end of week 4.
🤰 Hormone levels are changing even if you don’t feel it yet. Progesterone increases to prevent your period, and your hCG levels rise, which is the hormone detected in pregnancy tests.
🫄 The first scan is usually a dating scan to confirm gestational age, followed by a viability scan and Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) in the first trimester.
A Morphology scan occurs between 18-20 weeks.
You may need additional growth scans later in the pregnancy.

📣There are some misconceptions, worries and questions that often come up when I talk to my patients about a cervical screening test.
So let’s tackle some of those;
❓Is a cervical Screening Test different to a pap smear?
The cervical screening test, formerly known as a Pap smear, performs the same procedure but now detects HPV, whereas the Pap smear focused on identifying abnormal cells.
❓Should I only have a cervical screening test if I think there’s a problem?
The Department of Health in Australia and The Cancer Council recommend women 25 and older should be screened every 5 years.
❓Is a cervical screening test used to diagnose cancer?
It is one of the most effective ways to detect pre-cancerous changes of the cervix and cervical cancer.
Visit your GP as soon as possible, the test itself only takes a few minutes and it saves lives.
Have a look at my website for more information!

Planning for a family or in your first trimester?
🌸 Genetic carrier screening is a simple way to learn about potential genetic conditions that could be passed on to your baby.
As of November 2023, Medicare has added 34 rebates for genetic testing. They are available to everyone , even without a personal or family history of symptoms or conditions. Some of these conditions will be 100% bulk-billed.
The screening can be as simple as a mouth swab or a blood test.
If a problem is found, you can look at other ways to get pregnant, such as IVF.
If you’re already pregnant, you can talk to me or a genetic counsellor about the best course of action. This might involve:
More tests
Non-invasive pre-natal blood test (NIPT)
Chorionic villus sampling (CVS)
Amniocentesis.
