We are running urchin feeding trials with long-spined sea urchins in Sydney, Australia, collaborating with @Urchinomics and @Unsw.
Follow us to see our progress!
Some results of feeding trials after 10 weeks for ! These urchins started off at 2% g***d index from the barren and doubled over the experimental period. Now to get into the data analysis! 😊😊
Sea urchin madness! We definitely have less urchins after two rounds of dissections but there are still so many urchins.
Big long-spined sea urchins! The urchins in our trials have shells of 6-10cm, but the added spine length (hence the name!) makes them look much bigger!
Some highlights from our dissections yesterday 6 weeks into the trial. So far we are seeing (slow) g***d growth in the urchins fed the Urchinomics formulated diet, and no change in the urchins fed fresh kelp, kelp pellets or wrack. It will be interesting to see results when 10 weeks rolls around! 😄
Sunday urchin feeding and cleaning featuring our wonderful volunteer Tash 😊 I did alot of volunteering in undergrad, so it is nice to be able to pay those experiences forward- and I really appreciate the help!
Sea urchin feeding time! We are halfway through the experiment this week and have 6 week dissections coming up next week! 😊😊 Urchinomics UNSW Science
Sea urchins dissections are messy as, especially with the purple dye of the long spined sea urchin! Notice you can see the white jaw structure, purple guts and yellow g***ds of the sea urchin as I open it up - those are the main components of these simple invertebrates. Their g***ds are also known as uni, roe or kina and are and important food source and delicacy around the world!
Dissections at week three showed g***d growth in some of the treatments, and some interesting developments. It will be interesting to see where week 6 takes us, as the g***d growth tends to progress slowly at first and then more rapidly toward the end of the experiment.

Feeding time for these hungry long-spined sea urchins! Yum yum 😊🍴
We have some hungry urchins in the lab! 😍😍
We are running feeding trials with long-spined sea urchins (Centrostephanus rodgersii) in Sydney, collaborating with UNSW Science and Urchinomics to research how we can best feed these urchins in aquaculture systems. Long-spined urchins form barrens (areas where all kelp has been eaten) in New South Wales, and since the 1970s have also extended their range into Tasmanian where they are damaging kelp forests. The idea is that we can take starving urchins from barrens and feed them in the lab to increase their g***d size and quality. This roe can then be exported and sold, providing kelp conservation outcomes and marketable products! Follow us to see how the experiment progresses over the next 8 weeks.
