All welcome!
We are deeply saddened by the news that distinguished Australian artist Guy Warren has died in his 103rd year.
A painter, draughtsman, teacher and humanist, his visionary work spanned more than eight decades, inspired by personal experiences and memories of place.
Warren was born in Goulburn in 1921. He served with the Australian army in New Guinea during WW2 and subsequently studied at East Sydney Technical College (now the National Art School) under the scheme established to assist returned servicemen. His Bougainville experiences of 1944–45 are currently the subject of an exhibition at the Anzac Memorial, Hyde Park.
Warren travelled to London in the 1950s to undertake further training, then moved back to Australia where the rainforest landscapes around Jamberoo provided a rich source for his art.
Warren's artistic career grew in the following decades – he won the Archibald Prize in 1985 with a portrait of sculptor Bert Flugelman, was a finalist in the Sulman, Wynne and Dobell Prizes several times, and was awarded the Wynne’s Trustees' Watercolour Prize in 1979. A tireless teacher, leader and supporter of fellow artists, Warren received an OAM in 1999 and an AM in 2013 for services to the arts.
In 2021, Warren sat for an Archibald Prize portrait by artist Peter Wegner, and the depiction of this much-loved painter in his 100th year won the Prize on its own centenary.
Continuing to paint and exhibit prolifically in the years following his 100th birthday, Warren's energy, inventive spirit, dedication and mentorship will now be greatly missed within Australia's creative community.
The Art Gallery extends sincere condolences to Guy's family, friends and many admirers.
