Deep decarbonisation of our economy requires a lot of renewable generation and storage - 125GW and 46GW on AEMO’s projections - but we also need peaking capacity to firm renewables during those few very hot or very cold days throughout the year. It’s in this context that Federation is pleased to announce that we have acquired a 49.9% interest in Merredin Energy, an 82 MW peaker located in the Western Australian energy market, where the McGowan Government has recently announced an ambitious coal retirement program. We have a repowering plan in place for Merredin; we’ll make it carbon neutral by offsetting 100% emissions, install a battery on the site and convert the facility to biofuels.
