Same design, different colourways. It is always so interesting when you see a design in different colours. You can imagine it as a dress, swimwear, fabric for upholstering or whatever your imagination brings to you. We can definately see a mixture of creative applications with these!

This design is called ‘Poppy Major’. It is a very simple and elegant design where we celebrate the imperfections that only hand drawing can produce. You just can’t beat the human touch!

We asked our team to select their favourite designs and wanted to share them with you too! This one is Randall's favourite. He grew up in the Blue Mountains near Sydney, and remembers seeing the Hydrangeas in nature - as well as this exact colourway as wallpaper in his home! The artist behind this stunning design is Noel Lyons.

As we release designs from the the David K Miles archives within our library, it is enriching for us to learn how he was motivated to create his designs and the story behind natures inspiration. Thank you Graeme!

This original hand drawn design from the 1970's is called ‘Manhattan’ by David Miles and is scheduled in for digitising and cataloguing. We love how 2 colourways being used on the same design gives it a very different impact. Either way, the retro style is definitely a hit with us!

25/08/2023

With the onset of spring, we wanted to share a recently digitised design from our library called ‘Paradise’ by David Miles.
It was originally hand drawn in the early 1970’s for wallpaper, and uses a translucent ink over 4 layers to give it a multi-coloured and living effect.
This is definitely a statement wallpaper piece.

We are in love with this design called Snow Gum from our library, by David Miles.
In the 1970’s there was a very small group of individuals designing and producing wallpaper, and two most prominent were Florence Broadhurst and David Miles. David was trained as an architectural draughtsperson and was a talented artist. He was working for a flamboyant, high society interior decorator, Merle de Boulay and designed murals for private clients and mosaic tables.

EXCITEMENT IN THE STUDIO:
Rediscovery of a Design Treasure
'Japanese Ladies'
Unearthed from Decades-Old Archive

We are thrilled to announce an exciting discovery within our archive. In a ceremonial “unveiling” today, Jennifer Clarke, head designer at AMoD, opened a trove of film positives acquired over two decades ago from the library of renowned artist, David K. Miles.
Among these film positives, thought to be 'hiding' in one of five cartons, was an exceptional example of 70's hand-drawn design titled "Japanese Ladies". This piece, hidden in the fourth box, was located after an intensive search amongst roughly 70 gems in each carton.
The 'Japanese Ladies' design is a fascinating reflection of the chinoiserie style that's currently experiencing a strong resurgence. Its discovery significantly enriches our library and exemplifies the dynamic journey of design history that AMoD aims to showcase.
'Japanese Ladies' was first seen in a DKM wallpaper sample book, thought to be from the mid '70s. The original hand-drawn film was found in excellent condition, and it's now been secured through scanning.
