At Frank Mac's, we've recently introduced a new feature: a photo wall adorned with captivating images of rural Ireland. These photographs are the work of David Ryan, an exceptionally talented documentary photographer from County Kildare, Ireland.

Before the 1960s, Ireland’s drinking establishments were predominantly the domain of men, with women often relegated to a private area known as The Snug.

The snug is a small, enclosed area, often located in a corner of the pub, separated from the main bar by a curtain and wooden panels. They typically feature a small hatch which drinks could be served, ensuring minimal interaction with the rest of the pub's patrons.

It was also a place for politicians, priests and buying & selling of illegal goods without attracting attention.

The charm and tradition of the snug have preserved its place in many Irish pubs to this day maintaining their cosy, intimate atmosphere.
