Shell Yeah! Citizen Science Saves Turtles with the 1 Million Turtles Project Today is World Turtle Day! Australia is home to 23 species of freshwater turtles which you can discover through the ALA! We’re celebrating the day by chatting to Dr Ricky Spencer - Associate Professor from Western Sydney University who co-leads the 1 Million Turtles (1MT) citizen science project.

🐢🌍 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲! 🌍🐢

Today, we celebrate these incredible creatures and strive to increase our respect and knowledge for one of the world's oldest inhabitants.

Turtles are remarkable symbols of resilience and longevity. These gentle beings have graced our planet for over 200 million years, yet the exotic food industry, habitat destruction, and the illegal pet trade threaten their existence.

On this day, conservation organisations, researchers, educators, and individuals worldwide unite to promote actions supporting turtle conservation efforts.

At UPV, we're passionate about turtles and recognise their vital role in our ecosystem. We are privileged to see many of these magnificent creatures at our clinic, so if you have a turtle companion at home, we'd be honoured to meet them and ensure they're thriving!

Let's join hands in protecting and preserving these ancient marvels for generations to come. Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢💚

🐢 WORLD TURTLE DAY 2024 🐢

🌊🐢May 23rd is World Turtle Day🐢🌊

World Turtle Day is celebrated annually on May 23 to raise awareness about the need to protect turtles and their habitats. With over 300 species of turtles existing worldwide, many are endangered due to pollution, habitat loss, and hunting.

Turtles play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of aquatic and terrestrial environments. Today, we emphasize the importance of protecting these magnificent creatures and their ecosystems. Let's work together to reduce pollution and stop using turtle products.

Here’s a fun trivia about turtles in the Philippines: Did you know that the Philippines is home to five out of seven marine turtle species? These include the Green Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, Olive Ridley Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, and the Leatherback Turtle. Each of these species contributes to our rich marine biodiversity and needs our collective efforts for their conservation.

Today is World Turtle Day! 🐢

We're excited to share progress on a turtle conservation project funded by WIRES and led by Associate Professor Ricky Spencer from Western Sydney University. This project aims to establish breeding and release programs for the Manning River Turtle, Bell's River Turtle, and now the Hunter River Turtle.

Freshwater turtles are vital for healthy ecosystems, but their populations are rapidly declining due to habitat destruction and climate change. This project, part of the larger One Million Turtle Project (1MT), not only works to save these turtles but also enhances STEM literacy, incorporates First Nations knowledge, influences policy, and fosters community engagement.

Thanks to the dedication of hundreds of citizen scientists and the support of partners like WIRES, the project has saved over 1000 freshwater turtles and more than 200 nests since 2022.

Thank you to everyone involved for making this incredible achievement possible! 💚

Autumn is a special time for turtles.

As well as the season for broad-shell turtles to come out to nest, autumn is a common time for hatchlings of other species to be emerging and making their way to the water.

A quick reminder if you protected a turtle nest. Please do not disturb it or dig it up at the end of the season to see if the eggs have hatched.

We’re not sure why, but after hatching baby turtles can stay in the nest for quite a long time, sometimes for more than a year!

Turtles hatch from the egg with large yolk reserves that they take into their body, and they can live off this for a very long time. This is totally natural and probably an adaptation to enable them to survive in the nest during droughts.

When they sense whatever cue it is they are waiting for, they will emerge on their own. The recommended use of protective mesh with 4-5cm holes is perfect to allow them to do this.

You can be pretty safe to assume your wonderful efforts to mesh protect the nest will allow a bundle of tiny turtles to emerge when they feel the time is right. 🐢

Egg-citing news for the Manning River Turtle!🐢🥚

In a huge milestone, the Aussie Ark and Australian Reptile Park Manning River Turtle captive breeding program produced its first eggs late last year.

Only found in the Manning River on the mid north coast of NSW, the endangered Manning River Turtle was in a precarious position after the 2019-20 bushfires. With support from the Australian Government, Aussie Ark and the Australian Reptile Park rescued a number of mature wild turtles and eggs to establish an insurance program. These turtles are now breeding.

It will take about two months to see if these eggs successfully hatch but it is hoped the turtle hatchlings will be able to help boost the wild population and secure the future of the Manning River Turtle.

Great work to everyone involved in this project!

This is going to be epic!

It's World Turtle Day! Turtles are among the world's most endangered vertebrates and face threats on every continent that they exist. From wildlife trafficking, to invasive pests and loss of habitat, these ancient animals are getting smashed in the modern world. It's our dream to conserve the world's turtles for generations to come and do our bit for their survival. Over the next 12 months we're launching our latest project to help tackle some of the threats listed above and shine a light on the turtles of Australia.

Here's a juvenile Eastern Long Neck (Chelodina longicollis) from our latest project. A rare find amongst pressures from all sides.

Now that's WILD!
