Market update

Best value fruit: apples, mandarins, tangelos, Cara Cara oranges, pineapple, passionfruit, watermelon. Strawberries are still a tad expensive, but are about a dollar cheaper than last week.

Vegetables

In vegetables, the cold is starting to have a big impact on the supply of cucumbers, broccoli and especially beans. On the other hand, Snowpeas and sugarsnaps love a bit of cold – and prices for both are under $10/kg.
Leafy greens will be a little tighter, and the remainder is still reasonably priced.
The BoM is still predicting a winter heatwave from late July…

Mandarins

We’re jumping onto early season Honey Murcott mandarins this week, because they’re very low in seeds this time of year. Wait another month, and you’ll be doing spitting competitions. Oh, and just $2.60 a kilo.

Lettuce

Local Iceberg lettuces are just $2.27 each. They’re from Xerri Bros in Agnes Banks, and if you think it’s too cold for a salad, why not make San Choy Bow?

Leeks

If you have some of the ridiculously cheap Sebagos left from last week, get yourself from leeks for $2.20 a pop – also from Manuel Xerri – and make leek and potato soup to keep you warm.

Tomatoes

The Queensland tomato season has exploded, in a good way: field tomatoes are $3.58 a kilo. Use them in some bruschetta or guacamole.

Vegetables

Carrots $1.50/kgAs has been the case over the past weeks, vegetable supply has generally improved and prices have eased – even though tomatoes in particular remain pricey.

Avocadoes, beans, snow peas, broccolini, cauliflower, kale, silverbeet, wombok, cabbages, leek and onions are excellent value. Red capsicums from Bowen are the ones to watch, with prices dropping to around $6.50/kg – the lowest in months.

Carrots (from both Qld and VIC) are plentiful and should sell around $1.50 a kilo. Pumpkin prices have tightened a little, but they are still good value. Mushroom soup anyone? Regular mushrooms are expected to come to $11 a kilo this week.

The local growing season is in full swing: Basil in Rossmore continues to supply his Lebanese cucumber (with additional supplies from Golden Fields in Wallacia who are also picking cherry and grape tomatoes). Kale, cabbages wombok and silverbeet come from George Portelli in Maroota. Manuel Xerri in Agnes Banks is picking our cauliflowers, celery, cos and iceberg lettuce, daikon and rhubarb, whilst J*P Pumpkins come from Raymond Camilleri in Castlereagh. Simon Chong in Leppington is supplying most herbs and some leafy greens, with coriander and English spinach the best value this week.

Delivery frequency goes from every 3 weeks to weekly. No more wondering which week Chilled is happening: it’s every week!

Members will be able to custom select individual meat and seafood cuts.

We’re adding dairy and more: milk (Norco and Riverina), yoghurt (Evia), cheese, butter, cream and dips.
We’re starting with a core range, and will progressively add specialty cheeses, smallgoods, fresh salads/meals, vegetarian & vegan protein options, etc.

There is no minimum personal order – but there is a $10 delivery fee for orders under $75.
The Chilled Delivery tool introduced in August has made a significant improvement to the reliability of the deliveries.

Pricing

People often complain that companies that promote sustainable products charge a premium for the privilege. At Box Divvy, we won’t have a bar of that: being sustainable does not need to cost any more – and often, it’s cheaper. ECOKAPS is a case in point.
For starters, the cost of a box of 3 tablets (any cleaner) is $6.60 incl GST. Not only is this $2 below the price ECOKAPS sell online, it is also between 37% and 63% cheaper compared with traditional cleaners.
The kits – bottle plus 1 tablet – cost $11 incl GST, which is $2.20 less than what ECOKAPS charge in their online shop.

Spring onions: how to use them.

Spring onions are essentially shallots – or scallions – that are allowed to develop their bulbs. They still taste much milder than brown onions, and are also called salad onions. So by all means, slice them into your favourite salad. But you can also roast, braise or sauté them.

New season peaches and nectarines!
You know summer is not far off when the stone fruit season gets underway. We’ve been eyeing (and tasting) these beauties for a few weeks now, and Moussa has declared to season open. They’re not large yet, but eat well – and they’re a tad over $12 a kilo. In a week’s time, they’re bound to be cheaper…but who wants to wait??

Halloween Pumpkin Cob from Shepherds

For 2 weeks only, Shepherds is bringing back their Halloween Pumpkin Cob. This 400g cob is fun to eat as is, but even better fun when hollowed out and filled with a pumpkin dip (see recipe below).
It’s available from 18-27 October only for just $6.30.
Ingredients: White flour, oil, salt, water, yeast, gluten, milk powder, sugar, cooked pumpkin, basil.
Halloween Food: Dip in Pumpkin Cob Recipe
• Shepherd's Pumpkin Cob Loaf
• 500g diced pumpkin (1cm cubes)
• 1 clove garlic, crushed
• 2 teaspoons ground cumin
• 2 tablespoons Greek or Natural (unsweetened yogurt)
• 2 tablespoons raw cashews
• Fresh coriander (2 tablespoons finely chopped + extra to serve)
• Salt and Pepper, Olive Oil


Microwave pumpkin with a teaspoon of water for a few minutes, until par cooked. In a large frypan over medium heat, fry garlic and cumin in olive oil for 1 minute, then add pumpkin. Fry until soft, then remove.
Add pumpkin, cashews and the yogurt into a blender and whiz until it forms a thick dip consistency - not too pureed, a few chunks are nice! Add chopped coriander, salt and pepper to taste, and stir through with a spoon.
Hollow out the Pumpkin Cob carefully (retaining the bread from inside for dipping) and bake lightly until crispy. Remove the cob from the oven, leave to cool until it's just warm and then gently pour and spoon in the dip.
Decorate with a big sprig of coriander and serve on a platter with the lightly toasted bread chunks, plus vegetable sticks for dipping.


Lady Fingers are sweet, but…
…you want to eat them absolutely ripe. That means: waiting until they are showing brown spots. Any earlier, and you’ll be disappointed. They are normally twice as expensive as regular Cavendish, but at $6.83 they are positively cheap!

Capsicums stop traffic
It doesn’t happen often that all capsicum colours are around the same price, but when they do, it’s bound to stop the traffic.

How do you get kids to eat more lettuce? Answer: San Choy Bow. And here is the recipe.

Mango Mania
This flush of Northern Territory KP mangoes is likely to be short-lived, with Queensland not starting until well into December – so get some whilst they’re cheap! Singles are slightly bigger ($2.95 each) than the half dozen KPs ($15).

Snacking tomatoes: $1.33 per serve. Plastic-free.
Rainbow Medley and Grape tomatoes are in good supply, and come loose – so no plastic punnets. And at $1.33 a serve, they are less than half price compared with the supermarkets.

Baby Q’s: $2.25 per serve. Plastic-free.
We have access to loose baby cucumbers again: super-sweet, plastic-free, and super-cheap.

We have a choice of lettuces: easy.
From Green Oak to Cos, they’re all locally grown and great value.
