A huge thanks to ThinkPlace, Sh8peshifters, and The Growth Habit for sponsoring... and Lucas Mara is the lead organiser for this one.
We were lucky to have Chris Rollings speak at SydDT #101 last Thursday night. He led a conversation on the role of design in shaping how we want AI to impact our lives โ starting with service design to help businesses ethically explore and adopt AI.
Chris approached this topic in a refreshing way. Most genAI conversations over the past year have been dominated by fear โ especially as it relates to the role of design. Instead, Chris focused on design as problem solving (everything is designed) and how we choose to experience the world.
Optimistic and hopeful without being naive or ignoring the risks. There are huge opportunity areas where design can help guide the evolution of AI-enabled products that are ethical and valuable... and he shared some practical suggestions to put that into action.
The graphic recording was done by Lily Tha. This initiative is a collaboration with Alan Chen and Diana Ayoub from Sh8peshifters and their Think Visual/Sh8peshifters Morning Meetups community. SydDT is a friendly environment for people to practice their live graphic recording skills.
Thanks to everyone who came along and made it such a fun night. Couldnโt make it or just want to relive it? Itโs on Youtube now. https://youtu.be/SuTRMTStB64

A huge thanks to Martin Tomitsch and Steve Baty for speaking at SydDT #99 last Thursday night as part of their Designing Tomorrow book launch tour. They did a couple of readings with key insights, and shared a bit about the journey that led to the book. 20 lucky people also scored a free copy.
Designing Tomorrow draws on global trends, academic research, and case studies to explore how designers and decision-makers can leverage strategic design tactics to drive positive change in organisations. Designing for the long now.
Check out the book website for more details and to buy the book, download free resources and templates, and the Tomorrow Shop - it's not your usual merch shop, proceeds go to Common Ground. https://www.designingtomorrowbook.com

We were lucky to have Nirish Shakya visiting from London for last weekโs Sydney Design Thinking #97: Designer: Lost & Found. He shared some of what he's learnt from interviewing 50+ designers, leaders, and changemakers about self-awareness, creative confidence, and meaning on his Design Feeling podcast... and a lot of reflections on his own journey and practice. The five key themes were:
1. Pause and reflect
2. Define your own success
3. Prioritise joy over impact or money
4. Let go a little
5. Embrace uncertainty
Nirish shared so many great insights ranging from mindset and philosophy through to how he makes it real with his workflow and habits. He also used the great questions to anchor things... "what are you really curious about right now?"

So many nuggets of innovation gold including โsuccessfully retiringโ ideas that donโt have the evidence to continue, changing the revenue mix to increase predictability, and a risk/return portfolio model when exploring potential business models.

Sydney Design Thinking (SydDT) has just hit another big milestone... we're now a community of over 9,000 members! It's amazing seeing how the community has grown over the past 8.5 years since our first meetup. Tonight is our 89th meetup.
We're the third largest design thinking meetup globally (on meetup.com)... and the largest that's specifically focused on design thinking.
A celebratory shout out to the rest of the SydDT team: Ben Pecotich, Lucas Mara, Zoe Gibson, Kate Linton, and Kylie Mageropoulos... and Kingsley Jones and James Cooper who were part of the team for the first few years.
First of all thanks to the SydDT community. You're the reason we do this. Thanks for turning up, engaging openly, and making it fun.
