We were lucky to have Chris Rollings speak at SydDT #101 last Thursday night. He led a conversation on the role of design in shaping how we want AI to impact our lives โ€“ starting with service design to help businesses ethically explore and adopt AI.

Chris approached this topic in a refreshing way. Most genAI conversations over the past year have been dominated by fear โ€“ especially as it relates to the role of design. Instead, Chris focused on design as problem solving (everything is designed) and how we choose to experience the world.

Optimistic and hopeful without being naive or ignoring the risks. There are huge opportunity areas where design can help guide the evolution of AI-enabled products that are ethical and valuable... and he shared some practical suggestions to put that into action.

The graphic recording was done by Lily Tha. This initiative is a collaboration with Alan Chen and Diana Ayoub from Sh8peshifters and their Think Visual/Sh8peshifters Morning Meetups community. SydDT is a friendly environment for people to practice their live graphic recording skills.

Thanks to everyone who came along and made it such a fun night. Couldnโ€™t make it or just want to relive it? Itโ€™s on Youtube now. https://youtu.be/SuTRMTStB64

A huge thanks to Martin Tomitsch and Steve Baty for speaking at SydDT #99 last Thursday night as part of their Designing Tomorrow book launch tour. They did a couple of readings with key insights, and shared a bit about the journey that led to the book. 20 lucky people also scored a free copy.

Designing Tomorrow draws on global trends, academic research, and case studies to explore how designers and decision-makers can leverage strategic design tactics to drive positive change in organisations. Designing for the long now.

Check out the book website for more details and to buy the book, download free resources and templates, and the Tomorrow Shop - it's not your usual merch shop, proceeds go to Common Ground. https://www.designingtomorrowbook.com

A shout out to Alan Chen and Diana Ayoub from Sh8peshifters who did the great book illustrations and visual design.

We were lucky to have Nirish Shakya visiting from London for last weekโ€™s Sydney Design Thinking #97: Designer: Lost & Found. He shared some of what he's learnt from interviewing 50+ designers, leaders, and changemakers about self-awareness, creative confidence, and meaning on his Design Feeling podcast... and a lot of reflections on his own journey and practice. The five key themes were:
1. Pause and reflect
2. Define your own success
3. Prioritise joy over impact or money
4. Let go a little
5. Embrace uncertainty

Nirish shared so many great insights ranging from mindset and philosophy through to how he makes it real with his workflow and habits. He also used the great questions to anchor things... "what are you really curious about right now?"

It was a great turn out on a wet and stormy Sydney eveโ€ฆ a huge thanks to everyone who came and made it a fun night! Thanks to Thoughtworks and Dynamic4 for sponsoring it. Friday afternoon was SydDT #90... in Melbourne at The Cluster. It was the first time we've taken Sydney Design Thinking on the road. This event was proudly in collaboration with UserTesting.

Plenty of interesting conversations with some people in and around the Melbourne design and product community over a few drinks. Thanks to everyone who came and made it a fun arvo and eve and a massive thanks to our speakers!

At the meetup we explored the theme of Designing for Value: Building Digital Products & Experiences Customers Love. Louis Granger (Head of APAC at UserTesting) kicked things off by sharing some insights on taking the guesswork out of product development.

Ben Pecotich (Design & Innovation Director, Dynamic4/SydDT Co-founder) then hosted a panel with Neha Karira (Senior Manager, Product Design at Bunnings), Berlin Liew (Senior Product Designer at Xero), and Louis.

They shared plenty of great insights and lessons on how they work with teams and stakeholders to build better digital products and experiences, some of the challenges theyโ€™re working on or have overcome to make more confident decisions, and finally some trends theyโ€™re observing and thoughts on where it's all heading.

Sydney Design Thinking (SydDT) has just hit another big milestone... we're now a community of over 9,000 members! It's amazing seeing how the community has grown over the past 8.5 years since our first meetup. Tonight is our 89th meetup.

We're the third largest design thinking meetup globally (on meetup.com)... and the largest that's specifically focused on design thinking.

A celebratory shout out to the rest of the SydDT team: Ben Pecotich, Lucas Mara, Zoe Gibson, Kate Linton, and Kylie Mageropoulos... and Kingsley Jones and James Cooper who were part of the team for the first few years.

First of all thanks to the SydDT community. You're the reason we do this. Thanks for turning up, engaging openly, and making it fun.

Thanks to everyone who has spoken at and contributed to SydDT over the years, we've covered a huge range of topics and you can explore past events and speakers here: https://www.meetup.com/sydney-design-thinking-meetup/events/past.

We've also been lucky to have the support of some long term hosts/sponsors over the years which makes sustaining this effort so much easier. A massive thanks to Thoughtworks who sponsored for the first time in 2015 and have been an ongoing host/sponsor until early this year... and ThinkPlace who've been a regular host/sponsor in 2023. I'm extremely grateful for your contribution helping build the community and ecosystem.

What's SydDT?
Sydney Design Thinking is a diverse community of 9,000+ members. We've been meeting monthly since 2015 in Sydney to explore the world of design thinking as a human-centred design approach to innovation and solving complex problems - to help create positive outcomes for people, our planet, and business. We're one of the top design thinking meetups globally.

SydDT is all about helping build a connected community of people from a diverse range of design and business practices, industries, contexts, and rolesโ€ฆ to learn and share. To get exposed to what others are doing and see what's possible. We start with about 45 minutes of networking before getting into the content. New members are welcome!

If you're keen to speak at a SydDT, to sponsor an event, or to setup a collab... give Ben Pecotich a yell. See you at a SydDT soon ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

We're stoked to be bringing SydDT to Melbourne for the first time. Come join us for a fun, casual, and interactive meetup with a few drinks and nibbles... and great conversation with interesting people in and around the design and product community.

We're lucky to have Neha Karira, Berlin Liew, and Louis Granger sharing their experience and perspectives on designing for value. How do we work together to build better digital products and experiences customers love? How do we overcome the challenges and make more confident decisions?

This event is proudly in collaboration with UserTesting and they're making it free for everyone to attend! Grab your ticket now! https://bit.ly/syddt-2023-11-mel

Ben Pecotich will be hosting this one. He's a designer, coach, and the co-founder of SydDT (and the founder of Dynamic4). He plays at the place where design, regenerative innovation, and wellbeing meet.

What's SydDT?
Sydney Design Thinking is a diverse community of 8,500+ members. We've been meeting monthly since 2015 in Sydney to explore the world of design thinking as a human-centred design approach to innovation and solving complex problems - to help create positive outcomes for people, our planet, and business. We're one of the top 3 design thinking meetups globally.

SydDT is all about helping build a connected community of people from a diverse range of design and business practices, industries, contexts, and rolesโ€ฆ to learn and share. To get exposed to what others are doing and be inspired. We start with about 45 minutes of networking before getting into the content. New members are welcome!
