Les the previous, and long running owner, of The Bookshop Darlinghurst got honoured by ACON’s President Justin Koonin for his service to the q***r community on Wednesday night at the Honour Awards. Les gave a speech and talked about the history of the shop and also gave a shout out to long-running employees Graeme and Noel, and also Suzi, who used to work here and was much-loved. Charles, the new owner, got the chance to celebrate with Les too. Well done Les, hoping we can live up to your legacy x

According to Variety Magazine "Daniel Craig delivers a career-best performance in Luca Guadagnino‘s romantic drama “Q***r,” playing a gay American expat in 1950s Mexico City. The drama, with its explicit love scenes, swept up a packed theatre at its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Tuesday night, earning a 9-minute standing ovation."
It's unclear when we will see the film in Australian cinemas, however, Penguin Books Australia have done a quick reprint on the book from which it was adapted - 'Q***r' by William Burroughs. Plenty of copies now on the shelf!

Liam Campbell and Elska Magazine have finally visited Melbourne - and the new magazine has arrived in-store today!

Inside the issue you'll get Elska's classic blend of honest photography and personal storytelling, revealing the bodies and voices of a random bunch of local men from the Victorian capital. This issue is particularly revealing — nudity has always been optional for our subjects, but this issue is the first time in our nine-year history that every single one of the men inside opted to bare all.

Some of the stories you'll read in this issue include: John H's account of discovering gay liberation in the early 1970s; Luke B's remembering of growing up gay in rural Australia and discovering that he wasn't actually 'the only gay in the village'; Zhi Z's rather confusing text about how confused he is about himself and his place in the world; and Jayke F's description of a day at the n**e beach, where he confronts his insecurities and through the visibility of diverse bodies finds a path to appreciating his own body.

We're delighted to be hosting Gary Lonesborough in-store for a book signing event on Thursday 26th September from 6pm.

And there was a great review for the new book in yesterday's Sydney Morning Herald.
" 'I’m Not Really Here' introduces Jonah, a boy struggling with grief and memory after his mother’s death, plus the dislocation of moving to the town of Patience with his dad, where he’ll have to make a new set of friends. When he develops a crush on Harley, a fit popular kid on the local footy team, Jonah struggles too with his body image, though his insecurity can’t overshadow the warmth and honesty that will light his way.
There’s an earned optimism in Lonesborough’s fiction, and the inflections of q***r and First Nations experiences distinguish themes that most adolescent readers will take to heart."

If you can't make it to the event, we are happy to arrange signed, personalised copies of Gary's books and post them out or hold for collection. Contact us to make the arrangement.

"Before Camila Sosa Villada transitioned and stepped out into the world as a woman, she wrote as one.
Growing up in the province of Córdoba, in the Argentine interior, she inhabited a first-person, female voice in the stories that she wrote and kept secret from her parents. It was a powerful act of emancipation, she said, one laden with measures of shame and mischief, as if she were doing something forbidden.
“Writing enabled a certain courage,” Sosa Villada said in an interview from her home in Córdoba. “It was prophetic.”
Years later, that voice would be celebrated. Sosa Villada’s work has collected international prizes and accolades, often drawing on her own harsh experiences as a s*x worker, an actress and a tr****ti — a term she and others in Latin America use to describe people who were assigned male at birth but develop a female identity, reclaiming the word from its origins as a slur.
Language has been an act of resistance for Sosa Villada."

Les will be awarded an acknowledgment for his dedication to the community in running The Bookshop Darlinghurst for the last 42 years. Congrats Les 😊 Les was the former owner of Tbe Bookshop until June this year. He launched it with his co-owner in 1982, and was integral to its success the whole way through. Hoping we can continue the shop’s success and to serve Sydney’s q***r community in his stead for many years to come. Thanks Les # # #

‘I’ve spent the majority of my life fighting for the rights of Traditional Owners. This has put me in the firing line. But I chose this job, I chose this political path. My family did not.’ – Wayne Bergmann

It’s Broome, 2010. Nyikina man Wayne Bergmann has just received a death threat. His wife has watched a friend cross the road to avoid speaking with her. His children are subject to intense schoolyard bullying. Bergmann, a boilermaker by trade, and lawyer, is chief executive of the Kimberley Land Council during the controversial James Price Point gas hub negotiations. It’s an event that will tear the Broome community apart. Wayne’s story starts on Nyikina country and encompasses backbreaking station work, buried treasure, a Swedish bone thief and traditional magic love songs. His is an electrifying tale of resilience, determination and optimism, which shows what it takes to be an Aboriginal person walking in two cultures in a country where racism runs deep.
