As an active and proud member of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists (ANZAP), I truly believe in what our recently elected president A/Prof Tino Mercado stated in his speech that “ANZAP is bigger than the sum of its parts because it is made up of kind, dilligent and highly skilled periodontists committed to keeping the highest standard of periodontal and implant care for the benefit of our patients”.

Snippets of the bone grafting workshop I had the pleasure of running at the recent ANZAP meeting together with my two brilliant and talented friends and colleagues A/Prof Tino Mercado and A/Prof Mehdi Valizadeh.

Thank you Dr Peter Chen, Dr Jonathan Ng and the Straumann for the kind invitation and the hospitality. I had a wonderful night presenting in Brisbane for the AOS QLD, reconnected with many old friends and industry partners, and made many new friends.

Once upon a time, bone volume was all that mattered when it came to dental implant placement. In modern implantology, the role of adequate volume and quality of the peri-implant soft tissue in long-term stability of the treatment outcome has been acknowledged and emphasized. With this current knowledge, implant placement in narrow ridges not only requires bone augmentation but often needs soft tissue augmentation.

In this case, Straumann implants were placed together with simultaneous GBR utilizing a combination of Geistlich biomaterials and autogenous bone, and subsequently soft tissue was augmented at the time of implant exposure allowing re-establishment of both the missing hard and soft tissue.

At Precision Periodontics we are very excited to announce the joining of Dr Max Fertman to our team. Max has obtained his general dental degree from the University of Adelaide and is currently a Periodontics Regitsrar in the final stages of submitting his thesis and completing his periodontics speciality training at the University of Sydney.

Over the last decade, Max has gained experience working across a broad range of public and private practice settings in NSW and SA. He is passionate about all aspects of periodontics and surgical implant therapy and will be helping us to meet increasing demand at the practice.

Max has also been involved in the teaching and clinical supervision of dental students at the University of Sydney, and he is an active member of the Australian Dental Association (ADA), Australian & New Zealand Academy of Periodontists (ANZAP), Australian Society of Periodontology (ASP) and the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP).

Thanks to the invitation from my good friend and acclaimed prosthodontist colleague Dr Sarkis Nalbandian, I had the pleasure of speaking again for the candidates of International College of Dental Practitioners - a wonderful group of engaging and super interactive colleagues with whom lasting friendships are forming.

Advanced angular bone loss and significant gingival recession affecting a vital lower canine. Both hard and soft tissue levels needed to be augmented and re-established for the long-term stability.

That’s a wrap for 2022! Unfortunately we couldn’t have everyone present for this informal gathering, but it’s a big pleasure and quite a unique privilege to be working within a group of 12 well-respected dental specialists and over 30 supporting staff at
