🧶 Wiradjuri artist and teams up for a weaving and spool-knitting workshop to create nets and bags from plastic and polyester threads, on Saturday 20 July, 11am - 4 pm at the Gould St Party 🎨
Tailored for children and parents, this fun school holiday workshop imparts optimistic messages about sustainability and how the objects in our lives can be reused and recycled.

Karla reminds us that weaving is an age-old traditional practice of First Nations people and fishermen worldwide to rework, repair and mend existing belongings. Together, we can weave the future of our planet into being. ♻️ 🌿 Selected objects created in the workshop will be displayed in Karla’s exhibition Rise and Fall at over the summer.

Can you tell us a bit about your creative practice?

🌈 I am a comedian, actor and performer, that dabbles across many disciplines. My creative practice is facilitating escapism through memorable and irreplicable moments of entertainment. I am deeply passionate about advocating for greater representation, creating inclusion and respect for QTIBPOC - this hugely informs the work I produce. If I can do that by making others laugh, then all the better!

You'll be performing in the bar for the Festival, what can we expect from your performances?

🌈 CAMP & FUN!
I love Karaoke and I really feel it's a universal language (those who disagree are just shy)! I'm a big believer in getting audiences involved (with consent ofc), and encouraging them to share in the spotlight. So whilst you can expect all the bells and whistles from my performances, you can also expect to be blown away by your own hidden (or dormant) talents, waiting to be called upon.

What a night!!! Bondi Festival officially kicked off last night with the exhibition opening and winners' announcement of the 2024 Waverley Art Prize! 🤩

⭐ Congratulations Bronte Leighton-Dore for winning the $15,000 Open Prize with her beautiful painting “Silent meeting, a blue sky, South Coast”, awarded by Waverley Mayor Paula Masselos. 🌊 Judges Joan Ross and Julia Gutman praised it as “an exquisite abstracted landscape.”

🎵 Shining in our lineup is the soul, R&B and pop artist Kee'ahn who'll deliver an incredible performance alongside acclaimed artists Dan Sultan, Earl Weir, Matilda Brown, John James, Dan Mac, Jack Moffitt, Michael Tramonte, Elliott Hammond and Walangari Karntawarra. 👏 Kee'han will bring her rich vocal talent to the powerful Ruby Hunter's homage.

"Proud, Proud Woman: A Ruby Hunter Tribute" will celebrate Hunter’s enduring legacy as a trailblazer for young First Nations artists wishing to pursue a career in music and the arts. This concert promises to be memorable as Ruby Hunter first performed in public in 1988 during a festival at Sydney’s Bondi Pavilion, where she performed ‘Proud, Proud Woman’.
