Join us for the official live stream of Freedman Jazz 2023 - recorded by Australian Digital Concert Hall, at ACO Pier 2/3 on September 2nd.
This concert recording contains the phenomenal performances by finalists Sam Gill, Phillippa Murphy-Haste, Theo Carbo, and the special guest act Sweet Tooth.
Director of the Music Trust stated: âThis yearâs finalists were especially interesting in part because they are so different from each other!"
Reviewer for Loudmouth Magazine, Eric Myers describes the concert below.
In the sensibility of these extremely talented improvisors, a private musical language operating which all the players understand, and which has evolved through years of rehearsals and performances.
Sam Gill opened with his composition Fortean Days, accompanied by the trio comprising Novak Manojlovic (piano), Jacques Emery (double bass), and Alex Inman-Hislop (drums). The quartet is joined by five musicians to perform Gillâs composition All Imagined Futures. They were Phillippa Murphy-Haste (clarinet), Paul Cutlan (alto flute), Freya Schack-Arnott (cello), Hilary Geddes (guitar) and Bonnie Stewart (percussion). This makes Sam's new nine-piece band 'Vestige'.
Phillippa Murphy-Haste performed âan altered lineup of Microficheâ. It included Paul Cutlan (clarinet, bass clarinet, bass flute), Sam Gill (alto saxophone), Nick Calligeros (trumpet), Novak Manojlovic (piano, synths), Jacques Emery (double bass) and Chloe Kim (drums).
Theo Carbo, who has been described as âa keen truth-seeker in music,â was accompanied by Jacques Emery (this time on electric bass) and Chloe Kim (drums).
Sweet Tooth, consisting of Hilary Geddes (guitar), Jonathan Zwartz (double bass) and Chloe Kim (drums) present a very pleasant and uplifting half-hour set, beautifully played.
