It's bright in the middle, with a shell around it. It's called life. It goes wherever it wants to, don't try to predict it. Then you'd offend it. It's meant to surprise. Nature is ancient, but surprises us all. Rescue me from level-headedness. An unnecessary luxury of being safe.

“But what does it mean - part 2”

So the easiest answer is, I started painting once I returned to Australia after living in Japan for three years.

At this point, everyone goes “oh” as they place some of the visual styles of my works, such as wood block prints, Asahi beer bottles, rope tying, indigo dye patterns etc.

A lot of my aesthetic is referentially “Japanese” at a surface level.

For me however, choosing to live in Japan was quite a pivotal experience that greatly impacted my life journey.

It’s been a while, but finally sitting down to do some painting. I’ve put together a few sketches for some smaller works, a nice change from the larger series I did earlier in the year. In lead up to my exhibition, I’ll probably just try and produce a painting or two a week to flesh out the show. Exciting!

“The Hierophant” part of “The Ties That Bind” series. Now on display at ***r .
Gouache on wood, 120x90cm, $2500
The hierophant is one of those cards that when it comes up, it’s highly problematic for me. It represents established beliefs, and following an authoritative figure or group who can help you understand wisdom through tradition and practice. It often represents more masculine energy. I bring a lot of baggage to this card, which I’m still in the process of working through. There’s nothing wrong with wisdom found in tradition or with finding like minded communities that foster a sense of belonging. However, it’s important to move through these spaces with discernment and to trust your own intuition. Inverted the card represents moving from following an external source, to an internal one, trusting your own beliefs, knowledge, wisdom and practices. What can you learn from your your own core beliefs?

So, exciting news! I've decided to go ahead with the pitok solo exhibition! Everything is booked! The show will run from 22-27 Sep at M2 Gallery in Surry Hills. There will also be a launch party on Sat 24 Sep (which will also be my birthday party 🥳🥂🎈)
The pressure is on! Two months to bring everything together. There will be a mix of old and new works, so I'd better get cracking!
I have setup a gofundme campaign to cover costs, including gallery hire, art supplies and materials, launch party food, drinks and performers. Feel free to contribute if you would like to support me as a creative. https://gofund.me/8ac57943 Thanks everyone!

I haven’t posted much recently on the socials as I haven’t really been spending that much time in my art making. To be honest, I did a big push at the start of this year to produce new works, and after two exhibitions and a couple of markets, things just haven’t felt like they’ve been aligning. I don’t feel like I’ve been very successful in sales or finding the right audience, galleries, spaces etc. I know this year has been difficult, with natural disasters, a change of government, soaring prices in the cost of living. People don’t really have the capacity to be investing in art. So not quite sure where to go to from here. I have ideas on what I want to produce and create next, I’d even love to do a solo show, however I still need to somehow make ends meet in the process. Hmmm I need to do some more thinking and see what emerges.

“But What Does It Mean?”

The first time I was asked this question, I had a moment of panic. I had forgotten that this was part of the process. As an artist we go through this intensely introverted period, going inwards and finding inspiration. We delve deep and our inner world becomes something solid and tangible, there on a canvas for all to see. I somehow forgot about this final stage, where people get to see what was once hidden.

For me, my works have a lot of complexity to them, at the end of the day, they're all explorations of self and identity, so like anyone, we all have our complexities, stories, values, things that align, things that we're still piecing together.

Each time I told the story I would give a few morsels, and gauge if the listener wanted to go a little deeper………….

And that’s the end of that! The last time I did TOAF was Sydney 2019, so I’ve been wanting to give the Melbourne edition a go for a while now. Glad to have finally made it. I really enjoyed meeting my wonderful neighbours .art and many more. It was so good to chat with you all, hear the stories of your creative journeys and to encourage one another through a long but rewarding four days. I’m a little disappointed that I didn’t break even, but that’s the life of an artist. I did however have many, many good conversations with people about my works. I think I’ve pieced together quite a good narrative of what it is I’m channeling, so I think I’ll try and share some of these stories over my next few posts. I also have many new ideas for my next works, which I’m keen to get started on. I think from here I’m going to do some markets in June and August, and then focus on my solo exhibition in September which will most likely be at M2 gallery in Surry Hills, so stay tuned for that. Thank you for your support everyone and for coming with me on this creative journey. 🤗

In many of my works I’m drawn to use the format of still life painting. I love how objects have their own inherit, latent potentialities and histories. Objects imbued with memories can be so powerful! We horde them, we can’t throw them away, they have the power to take us to a time and a place, to make us reminisce, smile, cry. It’s also such a mystery to look at objects that someone else has owned or possessed and wonder what sort of story and energy it holds.

Photos from pitok.art's post 03/05/2022

It’s probably time for a new artist profile pic! I was inspired by a bjork photo for this shot, she had an Australian native bursting out of her mouth. I did the budget version and just grabbed whatever houseplants I had 😂. At the time it represented growth, me speaking and sharing my truth, leaning in to intuition and my core nature. I feel my next artist profile will still embody this energy. Stay tuned! 🤞 hopefully I can setup the shoot soon!
