Yesterday, one of Council’s garbage trucks had a load catch on fire, due to hazardous waste being placed in a household bin. The driver followed safety procedures, ensuring the safe disposal of the load away from the public and buildings. The Rural Fire Service was quickly on scene to extinguish the fire. This is a reminder that hazardous waste such as batteries (phone, laptop, power tools, camera, or lithium batteries), chemicals or gas bottles should never be placed into your household bins. These items can quickly start a fire in the collection vehicle or at the waste facility. Council will be hosting a Chemical Cleanout event this Sunday, 18 August at the Hawkesbury Showground, where you can safely drop off various household chemicals, car and household batteries, gas bottles, pool and hobby chemicals, motor oils, fuels, and fluids for free. For more information:https://ow.ly/RsTn50SY7pg If you miss out attending the Chemical Cleanout, the Community Recycling Centre at the Waste Management Facility also accepts batteries, paints, motor oils and gas bottles free of charge. For more information on where to drop batteries off, see the link https://ow.ly/f89V50SY7pf Thanks to our Emergency Service crews for their quick response to this incident.
