Organic products play an integral role within sustainable food systems as we continue our journey to a greener future. Follow along our socials this week to learn more about organic awareness, your support is vital!
Organic farming works with the environment and is focused on sustainable production practices, soil health, land regeneration and the protection of biodiversity.
When a product is certified organic, it means the item has been grown or produced without synthetic fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides and that no artificial colours or preservatives are used in the finishing process. Not only does this mean less chemicals in food but also less chemical runoff from farms, which is much better for the environment. Organic production relies on continually improving soil health and increasing organic matter.
Meat and poultry can also be certified organic. To be certified, animals must roam freely in paddocks, interacting as they would in nature with ample access to pasture, shade and shelter. The animals’ diets are natural and free of chemicals, and throughout their lives, organic animals are not subjected to routine treatments of antibiotics, hormones or other chemicals.
Join us to enhance and support the certified organic industry by buying organic across all categories, including fresh fruit & veggies, packaged food and beverages, vitamins, skincare, and even pet food.

This week, Dave’s got the inside scoop on the freshest veggies and sweetest fruits hitting the shelves direct from the market. From unbeatable deals on broccoli and carrots to the arrival of delicious Josephine pears, you won’t want to miss out. Dive in to discover what’s fresh, what’s trending, and what’s a must-try this week!
Dave's pick this week are Josephine pears which are a very sweet medium-sized pear. They finish earlier in the season than some of the other varieties and are eating very well right now. They have an amazing flavour and make an interesting and rewarding change to the far more common Packham pears. At their best and at a very attractive price in all HFM stores this week.
In Veg
"The broccoli/ broccolini option has reversed. Broccoli now represents better value after some weeks of very dear prices and mediocre quality. 1 kg prepacked carrots are again very good value and cauliflowers are very reasonable and at a very good price .
Each year as spring arrives we get a real flush of English Spinach and it’s happening now. Prices have eased and we will have most stores on special either this week or in the coming weeks. It's also the time of the year that we get the best quality on this delicious vegetable."
In Fruit
"This week we are featuring Josephine pears. Unfortunately they won’t be on the shelves in our Qld stores until Friday. I am quite surprised that there is a price gap between the Packhams that we have all the time and the Josephine’s which in my view are a better eating, sweeter pear. All the citrus is now good, unfortunately no more imperial Mandarins however the Honey Murcotts do a good job replacing them. Blood oranges are fantastic.
Apples are great, and the small rockmelons we had last week are available again. Lemons especially imperfects remain in strong supply. Inclement weather in the growing areas has adversely affected the berry quality, they should be back to normal next week. Unusually good avocados are harder to find."
- David Harris
Berry good news: Strawberries are still the star of the show! 🍓 With imports shy and the fruit quality high, indulge in these juicy gems at their best, even if they're a bit pricier than usual.
“It’s most unusual for me to pick the same product of the week two weeks in a row. However, I think unusual circumstances have encouraged me to. In a normal year, we would have large quantities of imported grapes and cherries competing with strawberries for the consumer dollar. A combination of weather in growing areas and caution with the economy has meant far fewer arrivals from overseas and we are faced with the strawberry market being less than the demand for the fruit.
The fruit is extraordinarily high quality but nowhere the low price that would be normal for August. So, we have very flavoursome quality fruit on offer at the cheapest price we have seen for months but in fact dearer than is normal for August. I don’t think our customers will be disappointed once they taste the fruit.”
In Veg
“Again cold weather in growing areas is slowing supply of many veg lines. Mushrooms are in heavy supply in Sydney as are prepacked bags of carrots.
We have a couple of very well priced line of washed potatoes both reds and whites available this week. Brussels sprouts remain a bargain and broccolini also.
New season pumpkin (all varieties) are difficult as many are cutting pale and so some days will be unavailable until more mature crops become available.”
In Fruit
“Strawberries are our main focus again. We don’t have imported cherries and grapes are not great yet so the demand for good eating strawberries are dearer than normal for August. This is exacerbated by the blueberries still not coming in quantity.
Plenty of good apples, oranges and mandarins. However, it’s very hard to select which apple to buy, there are so many options now. I am enjoying the Bravos at home. We are coming to the end of the southern Imperial mandarins and I think the Honey Murcotts are now the go to mandarin.
Kiwi Gold remain a great choice for a breakfast fruit and we are seeing some early mangoes in the market, not very good at the moment. However, the heavy blossom augurs well for a massive season ahead."
- David Harris
The Queensland strawberry season is in full swing. The fruit is excellent, full of flavour and very attractively priced. Most of this fruit is grown in the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast, where the nights are cold and the days warm. These strawberries are excellent quality and keep very well. Don’t forget to take them out of the fridge a good half an hour before you consume them. Strawberries are high in vitamin C, low in calories and a great favourite with all generations; a real treat with your breakfast cereal or to snack on at any time of the day.
Dave's Market Update
In Veg
“As always, the intensely cold weather that we are experiencing across the country has slowed down vegetable production. As a result, lots of product is somewhat dearer than last week. However, there is still good value to be found in broccolini, cauliflowers and a very good line of prepackaged washed potatoes.
The other bit of good news is we are seeing increased supplies of prepacked corn. Corn has been extremely dear and will start to ease in price going forward."
In Fruit
"Fruit this week will be dominated by berries and in particular strawberries, which are falling in price and magnificent to eat. You really can’t go wrong with any strawberry; however, my pick would be the organic line we sell. Blueberries are great, however, there are not quite as many to choose from this week.
Citrus is also really good. A light frost on the navels improves the flavour. This looks like a fantastic blood orange season as young plantings come on line. Apples are very good. Can I suggest for a change this week to consider the Bravo or Jazz varieties. Still a mountain of avocados available and this week, pines are starting to ease as well.”

Our succulent Beef Eye Fillet is just $19.99 this week at Harris Farm. So there is no better excuse to treat yourself to a delightful Beef Fillet Oyster Sauce Stir-Fry – easy to make and oh-so-delicious!
Recipe - https://bit.ly/BeefFilletStirFry
It’s a real berry feast this week. Blueberries are now in full swing! We have a choice between smaller good eating fruit from the traditional growing areas around Coffs harbour and the larger fruit from north Queensland. They are both good and this is the start of a great season.
As well, the strawberries are fantastic and will flush and get cheaper as the days get warmer. Blackberry supplies are increasing and raspberries also are well supplied.
Dave's Market Update
In Veg
“School holidays reduces demand for most fruit and veg and so prices are mostly flat or easing or on the verge of easing.
Tomatoes especially are suffering and we are seeing cheaper Truss than we have seen for weeks. And in gourmets too, prices are back especially our imperfect line. The glut of mushrooms continues as does broccolini.
We have an excellent well priced line of red washed potatoes this week and Lebanese cucumbers will be cheap by the weekend"
In Fruit
"As mentioned in my pick, this week is the start of the annual berry tsunami. They are all getting cheaper, all superb quality and all starting to ease in price. Maybe not strawberries just yet, however they also will as surely as night follows day.
Apples continue to be fantastic, if you haven’t tried our new variety , Cosmic Crisp, then do your taste buds a favour and do so this week. In the meantime, citrus is also excellent eating and fantastic value."
- David Harris
Dave's Market Update: Embrace what's in season! Red caps and budget-friendly zucchinis are stealing the show this week, while top quality Fuyu fruits bring a taste of New Zealand to our stores. Don't miss out on raspberry specials at your local and the debut of Cosmic Crisp apples – it's all about fresh, in season choices at Harris Farm!
Dave's pick this week is yellow capsicums. Originally from Central and South America, they are now grown across the world. They are very high in vitamin C and also contain vitamin B6, potassium and antioxidants.
They are normally dearer than the green or red options. A small window of opportunity will see yellow caps at around the same price or less than the other colours, in all Harris Farm stores this week. They won't stay as cheap for long.
Dave's Market Update
In Veg
Another good week for winter veg this week. The two new items on the HFM offer are yellow capsicums and imperfect tomatoes. The imperfect tomatoes are close to half the price of our premium offer and to be truthful, there is very little difference between these and our premium offer, except of course the price. The yellow caps are outstanding in both quality and price. I will be stocking up on both these lines.
As well, we have very good size premium cauliflowers, there are plenty of cheaper but smaller caulies on offer this week, we will stick with the premiums. Mushies are reasonable perhaps even cheap again and there is still lots of broccolini, bagged carrots and Brussels sprouts on offer this week.
In Fruit
No great change this week. Again citrus is superb. The navels are sweet, all the mandos are juicy and all is well in the citrus world. Apples and kiwi (especially the gold) are fantastic. Best news is seedless watermelon. This will be available at 99 cents per kilo whole, and if you consider that someone has to grow it, pick it and send on a truck to Sydney, that is an amazing price, enjoy!

Make the most of Dave’s Pick of the Week and try our grilled pork cutlets with poached quince and goat’s cheese salad. Chock-a-block with tasty seasonal fruit and veg, it’s a tasty transition to the weekend that will leave the whole family wanting more. Check out the recipe below. 🤤
Ingredients:
4 Pork Cutlets
1 Tbsp Dijon Mustard
1 tsp Ground Fennel
1 Tbsp Honey
3 Quinces
1 Cup Red Wine
1 ½ Cup sugar
1 Cinnamon Quill
1 Star Anis
½ Lemon
2 Bunch Broccolini
200g Fennel
½ Bunch Silverbeet
Salt and Pepper Olive oil
METHOD
1. Bring a griddle pan or a BBQ to high heat. Preheat the oven to 200°C.
2. Pat dry the cutlets and add the mustard, honey, ground fennel, salt, pepper and drizzle with olive oil. Rub well and set aside.
3. Peel the quince using a peeler, cut them in half lengthways and in half again. Remove the core and cut into approx. 1cm thick wedges. Squeeze the juice of half a lemon and toss well.
4. Place the red wine and the sugar into a pan. Add the cinnamon quill, the star anis, and the peel of ½ a lemon. Bring to the boil and turn down to low.
5. Add the quince wedges and place a rounded piece of baking paper the same size as the pan on top. Then put a plate to submerge the quinces. Cook on low heat for 20 mins, then toss them around and cook for a further 15 -20 mins until softened.
6. Meanwhile, toss the broccolini with salt and pepper and a drizzle of olive oil, cook the broccolini for approx. 3 mins until golden brown.
7. Cut the fennel into wedges and toss them with salt and pepper and olive oil, grill the wedges for approx. 1-2 mins on each side and place them on a baking tray.
8. Grill the pork cutlets for approx. 2 minutes on each side. Place them on the tray with the fennel and into the oven for 12 minutes until fully cooked.
9. Wash and remove the white stalk from the silverbeet. Finely slice the silverbeet and place it on a platter.
10. Remove the quince from the syrup and let them cool for 5mins. Add the juice of half a lemon to the pan with the remaining syrup and mix well.
11. Serve the broccolini, grilled fennel and poached quince on top of the silverbeet, followed by the goat’s cheese and the pork cutlets. Drizzle with the pan juices from the pork and with some red wine syrup.
