THE STORY OF MULUKHIYEH
Thanks to syrianfoodie.blogspot
In the tenth century, Egypt was ruled by eccentric Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah the sixth Fatimid caliph. He issued a number of arbitrary laws that were getting weirder and more eccentric as years went by. He tried to prevent women from going out so he banned shoemakers from making women shoes. Christians were only allowed to ride horses if the saddles were wooden and not decorated. He banned fishermen from catching any fish that had no scales and forbade people from selling or eating such fish. He also banned greens such as watercress, rocket and most importantly Mulukhiyah, the national and favourite dish of Egypt. Egyptians loved Mulukhiyah since the dawn of time. It was even mentioned in Pharaohs texts.
Nobody really knows why he banned Mulukhiyah. Some people claim that it was the favourite dish of Mu’awya ibn Abi Sufyan his archenemy. Some say greens are sheep and cattle food and eating them will bring human intelligence to the level of livestock. Some theory goes that Mulukhiyah is a strong aphrodisiac and by banning it he was trying to cut promiscuity.
SO WHAT IS IT?
Ask any Middle Eastern person that grew up with mulukhiyah and they will tell you that it is one of their favourite dishes. There was and still is great excitement when we know that mum has made mulukhiyah for family dinner. Our very first Mulukhiyah Night was thoroughly enjoyed and we had wonderful feedback. So here we are again.
Known in English as either Jew’s Mallow or Jute Leaves, mulukhiyah is a leaf that is only available seasonally, is picked off the stalk then stewed with coriander, garlic, lemon. It is normally served with rice, grilled bread, onion and, depending on the region, various meats.
7 BENEFITS OF MULUKHIYEH
1. Helps to eliminate sleep disorders such as insomnia
2. Aids in digestion and reduces cramping & bloating
3. Reduces risk of heart disease
4. Boosts immune system
5. Aids in lowering blood pressure levels
6. Helps in growth & development of children
7. Improves bone health & protects against osteoporosis

Almost 2 weeks ago, we almost lost our father, Michael, in a most unexpected way. Today, he is awake from a coma, out of ICU, out of hospital and back home with mum. It will be a long recovery but we are so happy he’s home.
The last 2 weeks have been the most stressful we’ve experienced.
However, we are on the other side of this, feeling extremely grateful for so much…for our amazing family, extended family & friends who are like family. All this has made us realise, even more than we already do, how important family and our relationships are. More important than ANYTHING. We have always been a close family, but this has brought us closer. We are grateful for our mother, who is always a pillar of strength and love. We are grateful for our beautiful brothers who have been amazing through this, and whom we can belly laugh with at any time of the day.
Thank you so so much to Tony and all our staff for just making everything easier for us as we got through it all. We couldn’t have functioned without you guys.
We write today to remind you all of what’s important. To hold each other closer each day and tell your parents how much they mean to you.
Two of our staff members have also lost loved ones the last couple of weeks. We’d like to acknowledge their families and let them know we are here for them. Mary lost her grandmother in Korea; and Faith lost her uncle over the weekend.
Thank you to all our customers who have been so supportive through this period and offered help. We love you guys so much and are grateful for this amazing community.
Make the most of each day you have…❤️❤️❤️
