- Where did the idea for Garage Sale Trail come from and how did it all start?
Garage Sale Trail started back in 2010 in Bondi beach. We started it with the tagline Don’t Dump It Sell It as a way to draw attention to perfectly good things like beds and BBQs and furniture that we’re being left on the footpath. We hoped to have 30 sales on the day. There ended up being about 130 and it was pretty clear that there was something going that was bigger than our marketing. The idea had resonated with the community in a big way. Fast forward to now and this weekend there are 120000+ garage sales happening across the country which is pretty awesome.
- Do you think so much stuff go to landfill each year because people think its difficult and requires a lot of effort to re-sell and to find items to re-use?
We live in a take make and waste society. It's just how it is. We are slowly learning that we need to be circular cos we’re consuming more than three planets worth of resources each year. A simple way to start to address that is extend the life of the stuff we have... and buy second.
- What is the goal for garage sale trail over the next 5 years?
To see Garage Sale Trail become a weekend on the national calendar and to see more and more Australians embrace circular living
