Stacey Porter Life Member Day 16/12/23

Good afternoon and welcome to Tamworth Softball.
My Name is Natalie Crittle and I am President of the Tamworth Softball Association.

I would like to welcome:
-Our special guest Stacey Porter and her partner Mel Roche,
-Life members Richard Webb, and Robyn Porter
-Family and friends of Stacey
-Members of Tamworth Softball Association.

We are grateful that you could all attend to celebrate and honour Stacey. It’s fantastic to see so many supporters here today.

Today is the 16th December. Today we honour and celebrate a great softball player who began her career right here in Tamworth. Her playing number for Australia was 16.

On behalf of Tamworth Softball Association Board, it is my honour and great privilege to announce the awarding of Life Membership to Stacey Porter. We currently have 5 life members of our Association, - Dot Shields, John Green, Lawrie Bradbury, Richard Webb and Robyn Porter - all who have made significant contributions to our sport over many years of our history. We add one more name to the Life Membership list tonight, having been nominated and agreed on unanimously by members of our committee.

Stacey has been associated with Tamworth for a long time. She started playing as a 5yr old. Her first club was Allstars. She continued playing softball at Hillvue Public school, and as a young girl in Year 2 impressed a female teacher with her throwing skills. This teacher saw something special and said “this girl is going to play for Australia one day” – and Stacey - Mrs Lynne MacDonald wishes you all the best and congratulations on your life membership, and remembers you fondly in your younger years.

When Stacey moved to Peel High School, she continued with her softball career, starting with a CHS Championship Title in 1998. Apparently this team of misfits from Peel High School were going to show the Sydney teams how to play softball. They were keen to get at least one win, however they achieved far more. They went on to win the CHS Championship with grit and determination.

Stacey represented NSW in:
The Under 16 Team in 1997 and 1998
The Under 19 Team in 1999, 2000 and 2001
The Open womens team from 2002 to 2022. 20 years !!! Wow. She has won numerous batting awards and MVP awards during this time.
In 1999, Stacey played in the Junior World Championships for Australia in Tapai Tawain.
She played College softball for the University of Hawaii from 2001 to 2003, breaking Home run records and becoming a batting superstar. It was during this time in 2002 that Stacey made her debut for the Senior Australian Team.

In 2004 at the Athens Olympic Games, Stacey became the first Indigenous Australian to represent the country in the Olympic Softball competition. The team came away with a silver medal. Stacey has attended another 2 Olympics:
- Beijing in 2008, receiving a bronze medal in an epic game that went 12 innings.
- And Tokyo in 2020/21 – where she retired from the Australian Team

Stacey became captain of the Aussie Spirit Team in 2010 and continued to lead Australia to many victories. Her leadership role lasted for 11 years, finishing up as Captain in 2021.

Stacey has attended 6 World Championships, receiving 3 bronze medals in 2006, 2010 and 2014.
Stacey played 446 games for the Australian Women’s Softball Team; the most number of caps by an Australian Player and the most international games played by any player in any country.

There are many many medals, awards and accolades for your time in softball.

The list of your achievements is inspiring. Your dedication and commitment is extraordinary, and you continued to learn and grow even through tough times. You are a wonderful role model and ambassador for the sport of softball – the game we all love.

Congratulations on a magnificent career. I hope you are enjoying retirement playing for the Brisbane Panthers.

Your hard work, dedication and perseverance have been instrumental in your success and we at Tamworth Softball are honoured to recognise your accomplishments. It is therefore my pleasure to announce the awarding of Life Membership to Stacey Porter.

Thank you Stacey. We are honoured to have you as the 6th Life Member of Tamworth Softball. Just as a side note, Tamworth Softball are looking at putting in an over 35 team in February at the State Championships. Would you like to join us? We are looking for a 3rd basemen, and a clean up hitter. Are you interested?

Thank you again for everyone for attending today. That concludes the formal part of the ceremony. I’d like to invite Stacey to throw the first pitch of our next game – which is our grandfinal rematch between Hurricanes and Savages. The game will start as soon as we clear the diamond.

Not long now and it will be Country Music and Tamworth Softball Association (TSA) will be doing gate duty this coming January 2024. This is our major fundraiser for the year and helps to keep member's fees down. We need your help to fill shifts. 2 to 3 people per shift and no experience necessary.
TSA will be donating $30 per shift to your club. Please facebook message TSA, message Judy Garrett on 0418 281 576 or email [email protected]. Please also provide your contact number when messaging.
It would be great if each team were able to cover 5-6 shifts.

While the rain and heat have put a hold to our competition, nothing will stop the presentation of Life Membership to Stacey Porter next weekend on Saturday December 16. We would love to see as many members, both current and former, down there to see Stacey formally receive her Life Membership from Tamworth Softball Assc followed by the 2022/2023 Grand Final rematch of Hurricanes and Savages.

Each week, our umpires of the senior games will go through a focus rule prior to each match with the base umpires. Each team has a total of 6 base umpiring duties across the season and, as an association, we are hoping to improve the knowledge of all players in umpiring. The focus rule for Round 3 are the hand signals for safe and out. Good luck teams!

Congratulations to Evie, Phillipa, Melody and Maggie now recognised as Junior Umpires for Tamworth Softball Association. All junior umpires plate our TBall and Modball matches each weekend. They are mentored by Ian, one of our senior umpires, supporting their development as officials.

The Australian Masters Games are over for The Lady Hawk Players. Unfortunately they come away from the games with no wins this year. However Amanda, Odette, Leannda and Natalie have had a fantastic week of softball and catching up with old and new friends. Congratulations Ladies on a great week. Looking forward to seeing you all for Saturday softball in Tamworth.
