SENIOR SATURDAY ๐ด๐ตโค๏ธ
Older pets make great companions โ they are usually calm, gentle and love spending time with the family. They are more settled in their behaviours and you definitely can teach an old dog new tricks! โจ
No matter how they arrive in care, they are all looking for the same thing. A safe, caring home and someone to love them for who they are ๐ก
See all senior animals currently available for adoption via the link below ๐

Our Seniors for Seniors Program also includes 50% off the adoption fee and a 10% discount on veterinary services for all Senior Card holders who adopt a senior pet.

๐จ WARNING ๐จ
A chemical called sodium azide, that can be found in trace amounts in some COVID-19 rapid antigen test (RAT) buffer solutions, may be toxic to animals if ingested.
The risk depends on the size of the animal and how much of the solution they ingest. Due to their small size, the risk is greatest for small animals (e.g. small dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, small mammals, and birds), if they ingest the contents of one or more vials of the buffer solution.
Please keep these products safely out of reach of all animals. If an animal has ingested even a small amount of COVID rapid antigen test buffer solution, please call your veterinarian urgently. The Animal Poisons Helpline can also be contacted for advice on 1300 869 738.
Back to school (pet) blues ๐๐
As we head back to school this week, our pets may need some extra support after enjoying a summer of full time fun with their best friends. So how can we help them to adjust to the new daily schedule? Here's some tips from the RSPCA NSW Training, Education and Outreach teams:
โค๏ธ Enrichment toys (like puzzle feeders or treat-dispensing toys) are a great way to keep your pet occupied. These can also help your pet realise that being on their own isnโt all bad. You can also play classical music or audiobooks to help soothe them or mask scary noises.
โค๏ธ Start to gradually increase the amount of time your pet spends alone (if theyโre not used to any alone time at all, you might have to start with small periods of only 5 or 10 minutes) and make sure they have somewhere they feel safe that they can go to to relax and rest. You can give them their enrichment toys in this area.
โค๏ธ Many animals benefit from some exercise or playtime to burn off extra energy before being left alone. Make sure you allow about 15-20 minutes of settling time before leaving them alone.

Here's a great post and report from RSPCA Australia about the benefits of pre-pubertal desexing ๐
You might have seen our recent pre-pubertal desexing (PPD) report which explains how PPD can improve individual cat welfare and address the issue of cat overpopulation in Australia.
To summarise:
Due to the climate in many areas of Australia, cats have a prolonged breeding season, allowing them to produce multiple litters per year - this is potentially a lot of kittens!
If desexing is delayed beyond the age of puberty, this can lead to cats producing litters of unwanted kittens before they are desexed. Desexing cats before puberty prevents the birth of unwanted kittens. In addition, there are benefits for individual cats to being desexed before puberty (including faster and easier surgery, shorter recovery and healing times, and reduced risk of some short-term and long-term health issues).
But this is a team effort! Talk to your veterinarian about PPD for your cat, and tell them about our recent report: https://bit.ly/3q3xDT2

We need YOU :)
With the Tamworth Branch, youโd be helping passionate people raise funds that will go straight to helping the welfare of the animals in the Tamworth local region by way of our inspectorate, nearby shelters, and through community assistance. In this role youโd be assisting at our fundraising events across the area, participating in vaccination/microchipping days, and helping plan and coordinate future group endeavours. While you may not work directly with animals, you are impacting how animals are treated and provided for through the work we do.

Here's a Happy Tail!
From little things, big things grow.. and grow... and GROW!
We received an update from Pickles' new owner recently and we just had to share. From a tiny bottle-fed puppy, Pickles has really filled out those puppy folds and is so happy in his forever home.
Way to go Pickles! ๐
*** Update - Sooty has found her furrrever home! ***
Sooty is an amazing girl with loads of love to give. She has been living in her foster home where she has bloomed into the playful girl she is today. She adores running around the house with her doggy friends and LOVES playing with balls and small furry toys she can boop around.
Sooty loves to spend time with her carer having pats and lots of cuddles. How can you resist! She will snuggle into your side and will happily spend her nights on the lounge while you binge on Netflix and give her tummy rubs. What a life!
Sooty's perfect home will be with a family who is able to spend a lot of time with her, training her so she can reach her full potential. She would love a doggy friend to grow up with and show her the ways of the world. Will you be Sooty's valentine?
