We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Youssef Ghonemi to the Tallowwood Health team! Dr. Ghonemi brings a wealth of experience and impressive credentials, having completed double fellowships in General Practice in Australia and Orthopaedic Surgery in Egypt. He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Zagazig University in Egypt in 2004 and has since built a distinguished career.

Dr. Ghonemi’s career path has taken him from Sydney, where he worked as a General Practitioner from 2019, to Tamworth, where he has been making a difference in the Emergency Department at Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital.

His expertise shines in the areas of musculoskeletal and sports injuries, with a particular focus on sports medicine.

On a personal note, Dr. Ghonemi is an avid soccer (or football!) enthusiast with a deep passion for the game. He proudly supports Real Madrid and brings the same dedication and enthusiasm to his medical practice.

This National Stroke Week, we’re highlighting the importance of recognising stroke symptoms quickly. Knowing the F.A.S.T. signs can make a critical difference and potentially save a life. 🧠 F.A.S.T. stands for:

🤔 Face: Is one side of their face drooping or numb?
💪 Arms: Can they lift both arms, or is one weaker than the other?
🗨️ Speech: Is their speech slurred or difficult to understand? Do they seem confused?
⌛ Time: If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t wait—call 000 (triple zero) immediately.

Remember, a stroke is a medical emergency that requires immediate action. The faster you act, the better the chances of minimising damage. Every minute counts and the quicker you seek help, the better the outcome.

As the Chair of RDN, Wiradjuri man Professor Peter O’Mara aptly stated, it's a week to honour resilience and reflect on fostering healing for our nation. Yesterday, our community came together for the Heart Week Walk, a fantastic event organised by the Heart Foundation’s Tamworth Trekkers and the Tamworth Cardiovascular Working Group. It was a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a leisurely stroll through Bicentennial Park while raising awareness about heart health.

Heart Week is all about educating and empowering individuals to take positive steps towards heart health. This year's focus was on the benefits of walking with the launch of the Walking Wins campaign. Our very own Dr Daniel Rankmore shared insights into the importance of staying active to prevent heart disease. He emphasised that many people are unaware of their risk factors for heart disease, urging everyone to pay attention to silent risk factors like high blood pressure and cholesterol.

“It is vital for the community to take time to focus their attention on the prevention and management of chronic conditions such as heart disease.”

“Walking can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease. It’s an ideal form of physical activity because it’s free, accessible, and can be done almost anywhere. Achieving 30 minutes of walking each day can significantly lower your risk of heart disease and support overall well-being.”

With only 1 in 5 adults meeting recommended activity levels, walking just 30 minutes a day can significantly lower heart disease risks, stroke by 35% and Type 2 diabetes by 40%. Richard Nankervis, CEO of the Hunter New England Central Coast Primary Health Network, stressed the impact of walking in reducing cardiovascular disease.

🌟 Meet our Dr. Sarah Woodford! 🌟

Originally hailing from nearby Gunnedah, Dr. Sarah moved to the hustle and bustle of Sydney to complete her medical degree but promptly discovered the city was not for her! ✨ 🌆 She went on to complete her studies in Wagga Wagga before returning to the region, completing an internship in Newcastle and residency in Tamworth. During her training, Dr. Sarah made history as the first junior doctor in the region to complete a rural general practice rotation in Scone, which was instrumental in her decision to pursue rural general practice training. 🚀

Dr. Sarah has undertaken further formal studies in paediatrics through the Sydney Child Health Program 👶🏻👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 and emergency medicine by attaining the Emergency Medicine Certificate via the Australian College of Emergency Medicine, but her heart remains in general practice and learning all there is to know!

Dr. Sarah is passionate about her home region and rural general practice, 🤠❤️ not only because of the sense of community and lovely, friendly, and medically interesting patients, but also because she's committed to serving her community, recognizing the pressing need for more rural GPs in our area. She hopes to be in the region for a long time to come! 🥹🌟

Outside of work, Dr. Sarah's love for Tamworth shines through as she explores the town on her runs, obsessing over koalas, and contributing to her church community. 🐨🐕 Her downtime is filled with quality time with her husband, her spirited Jack Russell, and sharing endless cups of coffee and laughter with loved ones at local cafes, while listening to Taylor Swift on repeat! 🎶☕️

She's a proud holder of an Advanced Diploma in Emergency Medicine from the Australian College of Emergency Medicine and gained invaluable experience in the Northern Territory, including Prehospital and Aeromedical Retrieval with CareFlight. ✈️👩‍🍼 Paediatrics holds a special place in Dr. Ciara's heart, and she's had significant exposure to it while working in rural and remote emergency departments. 🏜️💕

🐎 Back in Ireland, Dr. Ciara balanced her medical duties with a role as a Doctor for the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board and served as an undergraduate lecturer and tutor for University College Dublin. 🤠 Beyond her medical expertise, Dr. Ciara is deeply invested in wellbeing and health prevention. 🧘🏻‍♀️♥️
