Counsellors and psychotherapists provide both short and long term services according to people’s needs. They use a range of therapeutic models to enable them to work with individuals, couples and families including children. These include:
• Allowing the client to tell their story fully and feel listened to deeply. This helps clients to make meaning out of what has happened and provides opportunity to discover strengths and resilience which may be unrecognised.
• Using a Systemic Approach which includes drawing a genogram and/or time line, to enable the client and counsellor to gain a picture of what the client is living with.
• Using expressive therapies involving body sense: ie art and sand etc which allow the emotions to be identified, expressed and their significance understood. A client’s emotions can be a pathway for healing as actions and beliefs are linked with the underpinning traumatic emotions from distressing events in their lives.
• Introducing approaches such as CBT which enable the client to decide how to view a situation and what they want to tell themselves and do about it.
• Assisting clients to manage the symptoms of their distress with psychoeducation to understand their reactions and the steps to change their behaviour and to heal.

What is Counselling or Psychotherapy???
Counselling is a professional service that supports people to develop better understanding of themselves and others, it enables them to address life difficulties and make the changes they want in their lives. Counselling’s focus is on enhancing people’s capacity to cope with specific life challenges such as depression, anxiety, grief and relationship difficulties. A counsellor can help people manage emotions, resolve crises, reduce distress, develop goals for change and improve their wellbeing.
