Winter Pruning Your Roses

Hard pruning of your roses is best from mid-July to early August. This helps promote strong spring growth and a second flush late in summer. Avoid pruning in the morning if it is still frosty. Not pruning your roses can result in poor blossoms, weird stems and generally and unpleasant appearance. It can also result in dehydration with dead and soggy, blackish canes.
Use clean and sharp secateurs to reduce the risk of disease being spread. Keep your rose garden a w**d and pest free environment. Spraying some Lime Sulphur onto the plants controls fungi, bacteria and insects. Spray the entire rose including the ground to treat fungal spores in the ground. Never use Roundup (Glyphosate) near or on a windy day to stop drift. Glyphosate can cause leaf distortion and even death of your much loved roses. Regularly remove old dead flower heads and diseased leaves to promote fresh new growth. All of this is essential in obtaining a beautiful, flourishing rose garden.
Different types of roses require different cuts, yet the same concept – about 45 degrees angle pointing outward. Weeping roses perform best when they’re left unpruned. If you feel like you need to provide some maintenance to weeping roses, stick to deadheading and just a light trim here and there when necessary.

December in the Garden
Watering may consume a lot of time and effort at the moment if you want your garden looking its best for Christmas entertaining. Don’t forget to consult your local authority on your current water restrictions so you don’t go over.
Pot plants especially need regular checking with hot weather, as they can experience water loss. Once the potting mix is dry it may require some effort to re-wet thoroughly.
As it gets hotter and wetter, many pests and diseases will be active, so again be on top of control to prevent build up. Check around for water laying around the yard in pools or in containers for mozzie breeding sites.
If you want as much time to enjoy the Christmas and New Year relax time, get your garden tidy and repair jobs now to avoid stress later. Some of those jobs to do are -
1. Remove dead and yellowing leaves from plants.
2. Remove as much visible w**d growth as you can (spray or do the job more
thoroughly when there’s time).
3. Lay a fresh layer of an attractive mulch over garden beds. This is not a job you
want to be doing the morning that guests are arriving.
4. Clean up the edges on your gardens and lawns.
5. Lightly trim hedges and other foliage shrubs.
6. Check for any safety hazards like overhanging branches or slippery and loose
paving etc.

Preparing your lawn for Summer
We are moving into preparing lawns ready for the summer. September is a great time to do this.
Consider scarifying to remove the buildup of lawn thatch to promote good lawn growth. Thatch is a buildup of organic material predominantly dead grass roots, shoots and runners.
After scarifying, we recommend mechanically coring your lawn. This is a process of removing cores or plugs of soil, grass and roots from the ground. This allows the roots to absorb more nutrients, allow for water, air, fertiliser and other organic material that your lawn needs to seep through deeper into the soil and root systems. This will promote deeper roots.
Top dress after coring to screed and level your lawn. This would be a mix of sand loam and manure, depending on the condition of your current soil. It helps create a level surface, controlling lawn thatch, improves soil structure and improves germination and growth if overseeding.
Fertilise your lawn in spring as your lawn breaks from winter dormancy is a great start to assist your lawn to jump into growth as the weather warms up.
To have your lawn looking great for this summer takes time and hard work. The Green Gardener still has some time to do this all for you. Give us a call now to arrange an appointment. Ph: 0427 395 778

Isn’t this rain wonderful!!!
Don’t let a bit of rain stop you exploring and enjoying your gardens.
Go for a walk and see how and where the water runs, pools or causes erosion issues. Some rain episodes can damage your gardens, so it’s a good time to get out and see any potential problem spots. This can help with future planning around your gardens that will benefit both you and any creatures who live there.
Birds and bees love a bit of water and especially those that have a dry diet like finches and pigeons. All species need water so if you have a bird bath or drinking trough, give it a frequent clean prevent algae and bacteria growth.
Don’t forget to take your indoor plants out for a good drink of rainwater and extra nitrogen that the rain provides. It will give the leaves a good clean too and the potting mix a good soak. Remember to take them back in after a couple of hours or before it becomes too hot. Check potted plants that the drainage is all good as they can become flooded.
Collect rainwater. This is another way to save on your consumption. Whatever you choose to do, enjoy the rain.

Spring is here and there is so much to see and do in our gardens. Spring is a good time for garden maintenance and repair after the winter months.
Now is a good time to fertilise your lawn and gardens before the warm summer months come along.
If your natives have become too big or are woody and open, then you could give them a hard prune. If doing this, then it is also a good time to fertilise and give them plenty of water. If you can’t water, then hold back.
We sometimes forget pruning our natives but as this happens naturally in the wild by animals and weather, they respond well to a proper prune in your garden. Tip pruning just after they have finished flowering stimulates new growth and become much bushier before the summer heat hits.
You can prune your winter/spring flowering shrubs as they finish flowering. Pruning encourages a better shaped dense bush with more flowers next season.
Fertilise and plenty of water for actively growing, flowering and fruiting plants but be careful to use the right fertilisers. A ‘general purpose’ one will do most well, but careful with your grevilleas, banksias and protea family shrubs. Using a low-phosphorus native plant fertiliser will suit those better. There are specialised fertilisers for specialised plants but if you aren’t sure what would be best, ask for advice.
Other than assisting new foliage development, fertilising provides good nutrition which is important for healthy plants and helps them to resist/tolerate pests and diseases.
What a great time to get out and enjoy the warmer days and your gardens.
