Empowering Indigenous Australians through greater economic participation and employment opportunities

Photos from On Common Country's post 24/07/2024

On Common Country celebrated the achievements of the third intake of our highly successful First Nations Work Preparation Program, following weeks of pre-employment training and hands-on industry experience.

We had incredible outcomes with 7 participants from the third intake securing employment, and further positions under negotiation. Additionally, we welcomed new local employers Good Year, and SRG Automotive and Marine to the program.

As we celebrate this milestone, we reflect on the incredible outcomes across all three intakes. To date, we have successfully transitioned 23 participants into employment.

We’re excited to share that On Common Country has received further funding through the Queensland Government’s Indigenous Workforce and Skills Development Grant program. This will allow us to continue providing even more opportunities for Indigenous jobseekers.

This success wouldn’t be possible without the overwhelming support from the Motor Trades Association of Queensland - MTAQ, the Queensland Government, and our dedicated local employers.

A special thank you to AMA Group Ltd - Alexander Body Works and Re-Car, Carmichael Ford, Dymock's Mechanical NQ PTY LTD, GoodYear, Key Motors Townsville, McClure Refinishing, Mike Carney Toyota, and SRG Automotive & Marine.

On Common Country (OCC), Civil Safety - Safety and Training RTO #32381, and REELS is excited to have sponsored the Malanda Junior Rugby League Under 11 team to travel to Townsville for the Laurie Spina Shield!

We love giving back to our community, especially Malanda, where OCC Managing Director Noel Gertz, and Civil Safety CEO Robert Kerridge, were born and raised.

Noel has deep roots in Malanda as a local Ngadjon-jii Traditional Owner. Having grown up in Malanda, he was also a member of the 1969 MJRL Under 11 Eacham League Premiership team, and coaching the 1975 MJRL Under 13 team to another Premiership title.

The Laurie Spina Shield offers a fantastic opportunity for young players from rural areas to participate in a major event where they can proudly represent their family, community, and region.

The kids had an amazing time playing in the carnival, and to top it off, they got to watch the Cowboys vs. Manly game on Saturday night!

We're committed to supporting our youth and helping them build unforgettable memories through these incredible opportunities.

Through his hard work and determination, he was offered a full-time Panel Beating apprenticeship with McClure Refinishing, a family owned and operated panel & paint workshop in Townsville.

Working together to support the community 🤩

Arness was struggling to find work after leaving school in Year 10. It wasn't until she joined Workforce Australia Employment Services through BUSY At Work that she was able to connect with On Common Country and access pathways to employment opportunities.

It wasn't long before Arness was offered an Auto Spray Painting apprenticeship with Alexander Bodyworks, something that appealed to her greatly.

She is loving the hands-on work and steady income 🙌
