Re**us Diastasis (abdominal separation)
It occurs when the re**us abdominis muscles (six-pack ab muscles) separate during pregnancy from being stretched. The separation can make a person’s belly stick out or bulge months or years postpartum.
It can be managed by patient specific exercises or in some severe cases even surgery. I will share some exercises in the future that may help, but remember everyone’s pregnancy and post partum journey is different.

A few weeks ago I asked women to send me a question of a topic they would like me to discuss. I’m going to share them over the next few days. Here is the first!
S€X after birth
When is the ‘right’ time?
*xafterbirth **nallubricant
3 questions I frequently get asked at a post partum check up?
1. Are my abs separated?
Firstly ALL pregnant women will have some degree of separation in pregnancy. Therefore it’s normal! Stop stressing about how wide your separation is, because it has plenty of time to recover. The most amount of spontaneous recovery happens in the first 6-8 weeks postpartum. So, take it easy, use good abdominal compression and chat to your physio about a plan for you!
2. When should I have s*x again?
I use the word ‘should’ because we ‘should’ only have s*x after birth when we feel ready… but definitely not before 6 weeks at least! It’s normal to be scared or to avoid it for several months. We are tired, h***y hormones are very low 🤣 and did I mention we are tired!
Take your time, use plenty of oil or silicone lubricant (see my previous post) and DON’T put any pressure on yourself to get back into bed.
3. When can I go back to gym?
This is VERY different for ALL women. Consult with a womens health physio first!
Let’s burn down the bridges 🔥
One of my favourite bridge combos. Suitable for advanced pelvic stability. So not do these if you experience pelvic girdle pain, unless prescribed my your Physio!
Imagine your hips are headlights pointing forward. Try to keep your ‘headlights’ aligned and still.
Repeat the movements slow and controlled for 1 minute and repeat as many sets as you need to feel the 🔥
Let’s talk pads! 🚺
Firstly, what’s the difference between menstrual pads and incontinence pads??
Menstrual pads are designed to hold menstrual flow whereas incontinence pads are designed to absorb the rapid flow of urine. Additionally, incontinence pads are designed to absorb and hold much more fluid than menstrual pads, which means you will have fewer leaks. Incontinence pads often control odour better, but as a result may constant fragrances and dyes.
Why should you NOT use menstrual pads to control urinary incontinence?
1. Absorbency: they do draw the urine away with wicking fabrics and gel, therefore the urine may leak out.
2. Odour control: incontinence pads draw the moisture away with gels which control the smell of urine better
How do I stop my skin becoming irritated from wearing pads?
1. Choose a pad with a cotton top sheet
2. Select the appropriate pad for you needs. Eg; have thicker pads for the heavier day of your periods and lighter ones for the lighter days.
3. Avoid fragrances and dyes. This goes for what we wash our v***ar with too. Remember your va**na is a self cleaning organ. JUST Water is fine!
4. Change your pad more often!!!

Do you leak urine when you cough, sneeze, blow your nose, exercise, lift things or bend over?
Stress urinary incontinence effect approximately 1 in 3 women!
DID YOU KNOW ~ 70% will improve or be cured, if referred in about three months to a pelvic floor physiotherapist.

Good luck with the transition returning to work!
🙋♀️ Physio’s need Physio’s too 👏
While Little Miss busily explores anything and everything, I’ve been enjoying some rehab classes to recover strength and endurance postpartum. It’s a journey and I’m so grateful for the support network around me to keep accountable. Also, it’s nice to just “participate” in a class rather than always thinking about the next thing (like I do when I’m teaching). 🤍
Remember to always have a women’s health physio postpartum check before heading into exercise, even if you had a relatively uncomplicated birth. It’s worth it! You can find some amazing local Townsville ladies in the womens health arena at NQ Physio Solutions & Physio Vida & Pelvic Physio Co 🙏
Do you suffer period bloating like me?

4. Get a good night rest 💤

Dilators are one of the many tools a qualified Women’s Health Physiotherapist may prescribe you.
Often used to treat women with pelvic pain, pain with in*******se, post surgery or post radiation treatment.
They are soft, silicone and progress gently up in sizes depending on your needs. They also often vibrate!! 😅 Vibration is a wonderful way to calm pain signals and promote healthy nerve endings.
If you want to know more about dilators contact your local Women’s Health Physiotherapist.

Did you know all pregnant women have some degree of abdominal separation in late stage pregnancy. It’s called re**us diastasis and is a widening of your six pack muscle. Don’t stress Mumma’s!!
After baby is born the most amount of spontaneous recovery happens in the first 6-8 weeks.
This is a lovely early abdominal exercise you could start 2 weeks after birth to facilitate our abdominal wall healing.
Remember
❕It should not cause pain (cease if it does)
❕Take it steady
❕Consult with your with your Women’s health physio around 6 weeks postpartum

We are all about healthy v***as at Pelvic Physio Co. So let’s talk about lubricants!!!
Water based lubricants 💦
Pros: Gentle, pH balanced, safe with condoms
Cons: Absorbed quickly therefore not great for va**nal dryness. Some Water based lubricants containing glycerin and sugar, which are known to contribute to yeast infections.
Silicone Lubricants 💦
Pros: Last the longest out of all lubricants, hypoallergenic, safe for latex condoms
Cons: Harder to wash off, not suitable for silicone toys, may stain your sheets.
Oil Based Lubricants 💦
Pros: Great for va**nal dryness especially with breast feeding and menopause, doubles as massage oil
Cons: Not suitable for condoms, may stain sheets.
Remember different v***as have different needs, so if you are not sure, or having trouble with your lubricant - cease using and chat to a Womens Health Physio!
